Limping on Water: My 40-Year Adventure with One of America's Outstanding Communications Companies., by Phil Beuth

PHIL BEUTH spent his entire broadcasting career with one company. As the first employee of a fledgling media startup in 1955, Phil worked his way up over a 40-year span, as Capital Cities grew to become one of America's most influential and successful media companies. Limping on Water is a Dickensian rags-to-riches tale of a disadvantaged boy, born with cerebral palsy who, through luck, pluck, strength of character, skill, persistence and loyalty, rose to become a top executive at one of America's most respected and successful media companies, Capital Cities Communications; "The minnow that swallowed the whale." Phil was born in a blue-collar neighborhood of Staten Island to parents of English and German stock in 1932. To state that his origins were humble is like saying the Yankees know a thing or two about baseball. The young struggling family was crushed by the tragic death of Phil's father when Phil was just four, causing his mother to park her young, physically impaired son with her step-father, an embittered, war-wounded veteran (of the Spanish-American War!), who ran a ramshackle "Sanford and Son" junk business out of his backyard. What propelled this boy to raise himself by his orthopedic bootstraps to become a respected and honored leader in his field, a member of two Broadcasting Halls of Fame, head of Good Morning America and a Division President of ABC? What comes through this very personal account peppered with interesting and amusing anecdotes about his partners and celebrities like Ted Knight, Lowell Thomas, Charlie Gibson, Sir Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, Cher, Jackie Robinson, Red Barber, Nelson Rockefeller, Barbara Walters, Warren Buffett, Sammy Davis Jr., Burt Reynolds, Red Skelton, Muhammad Ali, and many more is Phil's generosity, self-deprecating humor, unbound creativity and warm-hearted congenial talent. More than simply recollections of a career at a celebrated company and the famous people encountered along his path, Phil's story is a keen insider's chronicle of that "Mad Men" golden era of television; a time when broadcasting as we know it came into being. It is also a powerful lesson in forging a career that is ethical and prosperous; "doing well and doing good."

Review
It's rare that a personal story can adequately serve as a history of a company - but because the company concentrated on people - Beuth's humble and evocative memoir comes close. --Michael D. Langan, NBC-2.com Culture Critic

A new college broadcast professors reference book
By Donald Angelo
A brilliant book about a great broadcaster and a media company that came together at just the right time in history. Phil Beuth is representative of the last great breed of true broadcasters who understood the possibilities of Marconi's dream. The golden age of broadcasting that Beuth grew up in was filled with patriotic, idealistic owners and dedicated journalists who never allowed their personal politics to bleed into their on-air duty and performance. Phil Beuth like his mentors were honest and true to the cause which meant deep involvement and service to their community of license. Because of his relentless commitment to make his station the best which he did he then grew it's success in making it the highest rated local TV station in America. An example for all to follow. He pledged that his news operation would always be fair and balanced in providing full disclosure of all details of each days events and happenings in making sure all the facts got reported unvarnished. That world came to an end in 1979 with broadcast deregulation by the government which changed broadcasting forever. Phil Beuth's ethics and standards have now been replaced by consolidation and profits. Limping on Water should be made required reading by all broadcast and journalism students in American today and in the future.

Very interesting personal take on the growth of cap cities.
By BuffaloSteve
If you have an interest in tv history this book has many fascinating stories about how a small broadcast company grew to be one of the biggest and most powerful in the industry. I was interested in the book because of the author's stint in Buffalo, my home town. But I actually found most interesting the story of the growth of cap cities and the kind of company that it was and the values that it had. Along the way you meet Phil's family and learn of his personal journey. Although there were times where I felt like he was trying not to leave out anyone he met or worked with along the way it was easy to skim over these portions. I got a lot out of the book and felt there were lessons that I wish more people in the industry would take to heart.
