A nice translation, good notes.

I enjoyed the translation. It is in nice literary English. (A later edition of this translation is available from Amazon as the Revised English Bible). The notes are interesting. On a personal note, this particular edition of the bible served as the primary one I used in high school. The explanatory notes were helpful.
The main deficiency here is that four deuterocanonical books (what many Protestants call "Apocrypha"), important to the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches, are not included: 3 Maccabees, 4 Maccabees, Prayer of Manasseh, and Psalm 151. This bible would also benefit from a greater explanation of the problems of canonicity that have lead to the deuterocanonical/protocanonical distinction. My description of this problem is motivated by my own family's necessity for an ecumenical bible (we are Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Russian Greek Catholic).

Lovely language

For me, finding a Bible I want to read has been a daunting task. First, I do want to hear from respected biblical scholars that the translation is a good one and that the notes are accurate. When inclined to "study," I want to feel free to read notes, check out maps. I want to feel confident that what I am learning isn't garbage. A biblical scholar I am not. However, I am a reader. If the translation isn't beautifully written, I get bogged down. The meaning is transcendent, sublime. Shouldn't the language that reveals that meaning be equally transcendent, equally sublime? I have about 15 Bibles that are now permanently shelved because of their tendency to bore. I shall never read them again because I have found the perfect Bible for me: The New English Bible with the Apocrypha. Oxford Study Edition. Would that it were also Kindle Edition.

Favorite study bible

I have been a fan of this particular edition of the Bible since I was in college. A very good translation paired with study helps that are comprehensive but not overwhelming. The introductions to each book are short, providing essential information. The notes are insightful and helpful without distracting from the biblical text. The translation is fairly free and is written in a delightful British style. My favorite Bible for devotional reading. Highly recommended!
