The Know-It-All Girl, by Joanna Foreman

Knock, knock . . . Who’s there? . . . Jehovah’s Witnesses . . . Uh-oh.
That’s how it started for Joanna Foreman at the age of five. From there, she gave up almost everything in exchange for the promise of “Everlasting Life in Paradise on Earth.” No Christmas tree, Independence Day fireworks, Halloween costumes or birthday parties. Surely she could celebrate Easter? No, again. She was not to pledge the flag in school or stand to sing the National Anthem. She wasn’t allowed to attend college or vote in political elections. As a youth, she was instructed to dump her worldly friends and would not be allowed to date or marry outside of the religion. Forty-five years later, when she backed away from religion’s grasp, her congregational comrades rapidly vanished—she stood entirely alone.

The author portrays herself happily waltzing her way through life despite all religious obstacles, until she has the emergent need for a blood transfusion after the birth of her third child. Obeying yet another rule, she refuses the treatment and survives to proudly wear an invisible halo which congregation members had bestowed upon her. She keeps her doubts secret until Emma, her best friend of twenty-five years, also refuses a transfusion with tragic results. Cancer didn't kill Emma—religion did. The lies and back-stabbing that occur immediately after Emma’s death allow Joanna to finally see the real truth. While she’d thought she knew it all, the answers Jehovah’s Witnesses spoon-fed her no longer satisfy. As she gains the freedom to think for herself and choose her own beliefs, she finds herself more content living in a world among millions of people who don’t have all the answers than trapped within parentheses with a few hundred-thousand know-it-alls.(less)

Socrates Would Have Been Proud of the Book
By Richard E. Kelly
After reading The Know-It-All Girl, I thought about Socrates and his sage advice, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Joanna Foreman must have had that in mind when she contemplated writing this book, a tell-it-all memoir, a well-written eye-popping life story. It is a memoir that will make you laugh, cry and think, to think long and hard about your strongly-held religious beliefs.
Joanna is not a preacher or a Socrates-want-to-be philosopher. She is a gifted storyteller with a most unusual, comedic story to tell about a girl and a woman who must navigate through life in a high-control religious environment, in a Cuckoo's Nest world. If you've been there, done that, and you're a woman, you will be able to relate. If high-control religion the way Jehovah's Witnesses play the game is foreign to you, be prepared for an entertaining education.
This book is not a story of blame and resentment. Yes, there are the side-effects of forty-five years of cult life, but Joanna honors the positive aspects as well. It's the rich imagery of the characters that will dazzle you, like Joanna's imaginary friend Dainy, her best friend Emma and the fun-loving, sometimes ditzy Joanna waltzing her way through life.
I also want to add that The Know-It-All Girl could have only been written by a woman. It's the kind of book I wish my sister Marilyn could have read before her untimely death. She, like Joanna and me, was raised as a Jehovah's Witness--a cult that treats women as second class citizens, that women were created by God for the purpose of serving man as a helpmate. Reading Joanna's story would have been an inspirational experience for Marilyn, as I believe it will be for most women. And if you're a guy, enjoy the vicarious ride.

From conviction to doubt, with love
By Allison Smith
Joanna Foreman's Know-it-all Girl shares with readers the thoughts and dreams of a young girl who loves her mother very much. From the beginning of the story, the bond between the 5 year old Ms. Foreman and her mother are clear. And this has an impact on much that happens in the book. From a knock on the door to baptism to marriage and children, Ms. Foreman chronicles how as a child and later a young woman, she deals with the inconsistencies and contradictions of a highly structured religion in which she has immersed herself but may not fully accept. The unshakable conviction of a child grows into the more skeptical belief system of an adult while Ms. Foreman navigates marriage, children, and divorce. And through it all, her mother stands by her.

Ms. Foreman has told us the story of her life with wit, style, and honesty. Her ability to look back on what were certainly some dark times endears the reader to Ms. Foreman, who never shirks her responsibility or blames others but approaches life with joy and humor. She has written a lovely memoir that relates the transition from childhood conviction to adult independence. I applaud her journey and wish her all the best!

What?? in 2013??
By Peggy Kuhn
I am not a religious person and quite frankly, I thought the Jehovah Witness religion had gone the way of the Amish, Two By Two's and the Mennonites. I was shocked to find that JW's are alive and well and living in the rural midwest. Joanna Foreman puts it all right out there in her book, "The Know-It-All-Girl". The book is a very well written account of one young woman's struggle in her 40's, to depart from a cultish religion that she had been involved in since she was a child. I found it to be fascinating...especially what a big part the elders in this religion play in the life of a member as far as harmful gossip and the like. There is absolutely nothing "religious" about this religion according to this book.... in fact, quite the contrary. I will think about what this poor young woman suffered at the hands of her fellow church members... especially if these JW missionaries ever come a'knockin' at my door.
Read the book... if you are a non-religious person, it will serve to validate you and your thoughts about the zealots. If you are religious, perhaps it will help you become a better, kinder and more thoughtful person when dealing with someone of different religious thoughts and values.
