Another classic toy train story!
By John Gough
Walt Disney's "Donald Duck's Toy Train" -- what a great classic Little Golden Book.
I knew this Little Golden Book when I was a child.
This was probably before TV began in Australia. It was certainly before I saw any Donald Duck cartoons, or found any Donald Duck comics.
It is possible I had seen a Chip and Dale cartoon in a cinema. (I recall a very early, for me, and very funny encounter Chip and Dale had with Donald's nut factory!)
But it was about the time I started playing with a Hornby clockwork "O"-gauge toy train set.
Did I like this story just because I was train-mad? Maybe. Maybe not.
(Later I realised that this story of Donald Duck, his miniature outdoor steam railway, and Chip and Dale, had started as a cartoon. Jane Werner wrote the narrative for Little Golden Books, retelling the cartoon narrative.)
(This also applies to Donald's very similar encounter with Chip and Dale when they commandeer his toy yacht -- another very funny, classic cartoon, and a great Little Golden Book. In fact there are many happy Disney cartoon Little Golden Book spin-offs for Donald, and Mickey Mouse, and even Santa Claus and his merry toy workshop!)
The story is simplicity itself.
Chip and Dale live a happy life, with a home in a hollow tree.
Donald (innocently) chops their tree down to make room for more track for his outdoor ride-on miniature steam-train.
Chip and Dale are horrified to find their tree has vanished.
Following the mysterious miniature railway track they find the steam-locomotive quietly steaming, unattended. (Donald is somewhere else.)
It is just their size!
Happily they drive it to the little toy town Donald has made to decorate his railway layout.
Chip and Dale find a house, and a tiny bed inside -- just their size!
Donald returns.
Horrors! His precious train has vanished.
He goes in furious search of mysterious train robbers!
Happily he finds his train, unharmed, and Chip and Dale sound asleep in the tiny bed.
Just as happily, Donald realises Chip and Dale are, indeed, just the right size.
He lets Chip and Dale become the engineer and stoker, while Donald happily rides behind, sitting on the roof of a passenger car.
Perfect!
Add to this the simple fact that Walt Disney himself had a miniature steam railway at home, and later built not so miniature steam railways at Disneyland, and made one of the great true-story films "The Great Train Robbery", a story of the American Civil War, and what seems to be a simple, perfect children's book takes on other aspects that make it a classic.

Favorite book from childhood, still readable today
By F. J. Potter
Donald Duck and his toy train was my favorite book as a young boy in the 1950s. I am told that I had to have it read to me every night. The corners were rounded off from handling it daily. Later, when it was passed on to my siblings, my brother decided that my copy was a coloring book, and so it was marked up with crayons.
When I searched Amazon for a "fresh" copy, I found this one through the Amazon Marketplace. The price was good, so I bought it to give to my grandson. I hope he likes it as much as I did.
Although my purchase is obviously a used copy, it is in good shape and is essentially unmarked. I would buy from this seller again, and I can recommend the story line to anyone. Here is a summary:

Donald Duck has a train that he rides around in his back yard. He has a tiny village as part of his layout. One day while putting down some new track, he decides that a tree is too big for his train layout, and so the tree is felled.
The tree was home to Chip and Dale, two chipmonks (ed. note: never mind that chipmonks live in burrows, not tree hollows).
Chip and Dale wander down the track, find the train, and take it for a ride, eventually coming to the village. They explore it and discover that everything is just their size. So, they move into a tiny house, clean it up, and make it look nice. All that work makes them tired, and they go to sleep in the house's bedroom.
Donald now discovers that his train is missing. He gets furious and stomps down the track, sure that someone has stolen his train and wrecked it. When he finds the train in the village, he scouts around and sees tiny footprints, which he follows. Eventually he finds Chip and Dale asleep. Then Donald notices that everything has been cleaned up, and that Chip and Dale are just the right size. They become friends, and Donald now lets the chipmonks drive the train with Donald as a passenger.
A great kid story. Maybe it sounds sappy to you, but it is better than many other stories, and it has a nice moral.
