Gripping accounts of all known fatal mishaps in the most famous of the World's Seven Natural Wonders.
Two veterans of decades of adventuring in Grand Canyon chronicle the first complete and comprehensive history of Canyon misadventures. These episodes span the entire era of visitation from the time of the first river exploration by John Wesley Powell and his crew of 1869 to that of tourists falling off its rims in Y2K.
These accounts of the 550 people who have met untimely deaths in the Canyon set a new high water mark for offering the most astounding array of adventures, misadventures, and life saving lessons published between any two covers. Over the Edge promises to be the most intense yet informative book on Grand Canyon ever written.

From Library Journal
Flagstaff, AZ-based authors Ghiglieri, a biologist who leads river trips in the Grand Canyon and abroad, and Myers (Fateful Journey: Injury and Death on Colorado River Trips in Grand Canyon), a medical doctor who has treated hundreds of Canyon injuries, have compiled a fascinating chronicle of deaths and dangers in Grand Canyon National Park. The book is arranged by category falls, dehydration, floods, the Colorado River, air crashes, freak accidents, suicides, and murder and at the end of each chapter is a chronological list with names, descriptions, and causes of the accidents. The authors show that most of the deaths, whether of tourists, prospectors, or experienced adventurers, occurred when people failed to pay attention to warning signs or did not use common sense; others are attributed to high testosterone levels. The episodes are engrossing, but one becomes sated with the details after a while. For public and large academic libraries. George M. Jenks, Bucknell Univ., Lewisburg PA

About the Author
Michael P Ghiglieri has worked as a wilderness river guide since 1974. He earned is Ph.D in Biological Ecology from the University of California at Davis for his research project on wild chimpanzees in Uganda. He has run more than 600 commercial whitewater trips in the U.S., Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Sumatra, Java, Papau New Guinea, Peru, Turkey, Australia, and Canada. His expeditions include well over 100 two-week trips in Grand Canyon as a rowing or paddling guide/trip leader or NPS River Ranger. Ghiglieri has spent 1,500 days inside the Canyon and has rendered assistance as an EMT during many accidents. His previous book on Grand Canyon, Canyon, was hailed by the Library Journal as "the single best introduction to a myriad of aspects of this 'most impressive place' this reviewer has seen. Recommended for all..."
Thomas M. Myers earned his M.D. from the University of Arizona and worked as a physician at Grand Canyon for nearly a decade, living at the South Rim with his family. Myers began exploring Grand Canyon at age ten and never stopped. He has hiked the Canyon backcountry extensively and rowed the Colorado River several times. Myers has seens, responded to, treated, and tried to understand the ontogeny of thousands of injuries and of all too many traumatic fatalities occurring in the Canyon. Myers, with co-authors Chris Becker and Larry Stevens, made the first-ever detailed statistical analysis of river accidents in their book Fateful Journey: Injury and Death on Colorado River Trips in Grand Canyon, dispelling many previously held myths about the risks of running the Colorado.

Our hiking companion fell into the river
By Patty K. Mooney
We were there when Jody Mack fell into the river in 1983. It was a journey of mixed emotions, as we had such a blast in the canyon, and yet of the 31 of us who walked down into the canyon, only 30 of us climbed back out. Jody had made the dire mistake of trying to touch the river water from a slippery slab. We never knew whether Jody's body had been recovered or lost forever. This book answered that question. Mother Nature is not to be trifled with, and this book is a sobering reminder of that.

Don't judge this book by its cover...
By Dad5
Don't judge this book by its cover. While the cover is a bit cartoonish, the book is detailed, analytical and compelling. Sure, at 500+ pages, there may be some (brief) sections you skim a bit, but overall the book provides detailed accounts of Grand Canyon fatalities, and more importantly, provides some key lessons to survival in and around the Grand Canyon. Both authors are extremely well experienced in the outdoors, with Myers also bringing the perspective of an emergency physician. You may not need this book if you're just planning a day trip to the GC and have the good sense to stay well back of the rim. But, if you are planning to hike into the GC (even on well-marked trails) this is a definite must-read prior to your trip. I read this book out of curiosity after a GC trip that included both the South Rim and North Rim, and also included a hike part way down the Bright Angel Trail, which is generally perceived as "safe". I was amazed by the number of incidents that tool place in or around areas I had visited. So, if you plan to hike in the GC (or travel on mules or rafts as well) then read this book first. As a bonus, the checklists at the end of the book are worth the book price alone.

Exciting book!
By HerGrooviness
I sometimes read to fall asleep but the first chapter got my adrenaline pumping and couldn't put the book down. It's a good, interesting, exciting and informational book to read whether you go to the Grand Canyon or not. It could make the readers think twice and realize when, or if, they are possibly taking fatal risks by their actions, in any nature setting. In my own experience, before I read this book, I witnessed first hand, at the Grand Canyon, those people who think rules apply to everyone else, but not them, by stepping beyond signs that clearly warn against it, just for a daring looking picture. That was before social media, so I can imagine there's a lot more of it going on these days. But that is just one type of scenario that is risky. The book tells of many people's individual stories and I'm happy that the author included some instances where the individuals survived because it adds a bit of suspense because the reader (me) is pulling for the individual to survive.
