Fugitives of Chaos (The Chronicles of Chaos Book 2), by John C. Wright

Wright's new fantasy, which began with Orphans of Chaos, and continues in Fugitives of Chaos, is a tale about five orphans raised in a strict British boarding school who begin to discover that they may not be human beings. The students at the school do not age, while the world around them does. The orphans have been kidnapped from their true parents, robbed of their powers, and raised in ignorance by super-beings no more human than they are: pagan gods or fairy-queens, Cyclopes, sea-monsters, witches, or things even stranger.
The five have made sinister discoveries about themselves. Amelia is apparently a fourth-dimensional being; Victor is a synthetic man who can control the molecular arrangement of matter around him; Vanity can find secret passageways through solid walls where none had previously been; Colin is a psychic; Quentin is a warlock. Each power comes from a different paradigm or view of the inexplicable universe: and they should not be able to co-exist under the same laws of nature. Why is it that they can?
The children must experiment with and learn to control their strange abilities in order to escape their captors. Something very important must be at stake in their imprisonment.

From Publishers Weekly
Five unusual students at an isolated English boarding school—Amelia, Vanity, Colin, Quentin and Victor—fought to uncover their true secret identities in Orphans of Chaos (2005), only to have their memories stolen (again) by their teachers, who are really their jailers. In this exciting sequel, Amelia remembers enough to convince her friends of their shared trouble, and together the five students set out to escape the school, regain their memories, rediscover their individual powers and remain free. Wright keeps the tension high as the students struggle to outwit the teachers and their minions, but never lets us forget his characters are teenagers, prone to all the usual teen troubles as well as the problems posed by their secret "higher" identities. With its focus on Golden Age genre tropes and quirky teenage romance, this fantasy adventure reads a bit like J.K. Rowling meets Roger Zelazny, and should be of particular interest to youthful fans looking for something less predictable than the usual YA fare. (Nov.)

Review
"Wright's myth-infused fantasy looks like something older Harry Potter fans might enjoy with its creaky British boarding school setting and its five ageless orphans--Colin, Quentin, Victor, Vanity, and Amelia each with a supernatural gift." -Publishers Weekly on Orphans of Chaos"Wright's Orphans of Chaos is a stylish roller-coaster ride through the best loops and swerves of science fiction and fantasy. Zelazny lovers in particular ought to love this book as much as I did." -Sherwood Smith

"A bit like C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia updated by half a century, but with more gusto." -Locus on Orphans of Chaos"I don't know if John Wright's intent for Orphans of Chaos was to write a Harry Potter for grownups. But that's what he's accomplished. . . .highly enjoyable." --SFsite

"An exciting, unusual, and very satisfying ride through the author's imagination, and the results are certainly going to make Wright even more of a hot property." --Chronicle on Orphans of Chaos

"Start of a complex mythology-based series from the author of the astonishing far-future Golden Age trilogy . . . . Fascinatingly, dazzlingly…erudite fantasy that trends inexorably toward science fiction; addicts will pounce." -Kirkus, starred review on Orphans of Chaos

Even better follow up to first volume
By Joseph M. Reninger
Another exciting tale in the Chronicles of Chaos by John C. Wright. This book picks up right where the first volume left off, with the five students losing their memories of all that has happened and that they have discovered about themselves. They've forgotten that they are hostages preventing an interdimensional war between the forces of Chaos (from which the students have come) and an wide assortment of other mythological forces, mostly centered around the Greek gods. They have magical and pseudo-scientific powers that they could use to escape, if they could only remember that they had them and they want to escape. The only exception is Amelia Windrose, who was able to put a bit of a block to the blocking of her memory. She quickly recovers and rallies the troops to flee their English countryside school/prison, beginning a fantastic flight whose only destination is freedom. Can they escape together? Will their flight mean the outbreak of war on an unsuspecting human population?

The plot is fairly intriguing. I found the first book foundered a little under the wide variety of mythology and the pseudo-scientific explanations and arguments between the students. Both of these are somewhat scaled back in this book as the band of schoolmates flees their school on Christmas day. Human drama and exciting action take over. In addition to fleeing the school, they have to regain their memories and their powers, and figure out what their final destination should be. This novel is a bit of a page turner and I look forward to the conclusion of the story in the final volume, Titans of Chaos.

I know I gave the first book 4 stars as well, though I was rounding up from 3.75. This is a full 4 star book. I hope the final volume rates even higher!

Absurd in a good way
By D. Bost
While there is some level of futility in reviewing a sequel that was good, or at least as good as the previous book(s) in a series (by contrast warning people when a series suddenly goes downhill is both easy and fun), I'll give it a try:

The Orphans of Chaos series is essentially "This will get out of hand. It will get out of hand and we'll be lucky to live through it" fed to a necronomicon printed over an old annotated Greek mythology textbook and read after taking the brown acid. Things just keep escalating, and while it's hard to match the transition from boarding-school hijinks to eldritch abominations attempting to eat your face that occurs in the first book, Wright makes the attempt to keep it up and largely succeeds.

This means that the genre shift from Lovecraftian mystery to outright action leans heavily toward the latter on this one, so if you're expecting much more world-building you may be disappointed. The building is done and now the characters are busy ripping it apart. The trippy anachronisms and out-of-place scenes that make the other books so much fun continue, adding a classic car chase constructed from elements of classical mythology and good old Lovecraft-speak instead of actual cars to the list of things you'd never thought you'd be finding yourself imagining, and the trend of the children doing amazing things only to be immediately outclassed by older and more competent beings somehow fails to ever get old. The characters are likable when they're supposed to be, alien when they should be, and annoying when the writer wants them to be actual teenagers, making them all well-rounded if inhuman characters with clear and sympathetic if not entirely lovable motivations.

Definitely worth the read, five stars with no reservations.

An OK follow-up to ORPHANS OF CHAOS
By ML
In FUGITIVES OF CHAOS, the five godlike teenage hostages introduced in ORPHANS OF CHAOS once again elude their captors, and this time it looks like they might be successful. Spunky and (as everyone keeps telling her) sexy Amelia remains the first person narrator. Tension builds during the early part of the book, as she carefully plots her escape, all the while observing and deceiving the schoolmasters. Unfortunately, Wright has difficulty maintaining focus once the orphans are free, and particularly after Amelia survives another kidnapping attempt by the monster Grendel. They go shopping in Paris, they tool around in Vanity's magic boat, they take a cruise on the QEII, they philosophize, they banter, they flirt, ... and they nearly get eaten by an angry sea monster. Some of this is interesting, some of it is filler, and all of it says "be sure to buy book #3!"

As with Wright's earlier work, this book is at many points amusing and (in a positive way) provocative. I also found the sexual content in this volume less objectionable than that in the first, mainly because the pedophilic and sadomasochistic elements are much less present. Yes, Amelia and Vanity do a striptease dance for Colin and yes, the sexual banter that was so prevalent in ORPHANS remains. Still, the sleaze factor in FUGITIVES is a notch or two below that in ORPHANS. Also, unlike some of the other reviewers, I was generally impressed with Wright's discussion of the contrasting paradigms of the teens and their Olympian adversaries. His command of classical mythology, philosophy, and physics/cosmology is good enough seem plausible to a lay reader like me.

Recommendation: You can probably follow this book without reading #1, but you shouldn't try. If, however, you read the first book and found it half-way enjoyable, you might as well pick up #2.

P.S. The cover artist would have you believe that Colin gets his guitar in this book, but that actually happens in TITANS OF CHAOS.
