Have Your Instructor Standing By

This is a great book if your just getting into business, however if you already know the basics you may want to try something a little deeper. There are quite a few questions this book just won't answer so make sure you go to class. As a supplement to in class lectures and hands on study you will be able to gain alot from reading this text. It offers alot of valuable information in an easy to understand format. I hope you like reading though because it tends to get a little dry.

Normally, I sell my textbooks back every year, but this in one that will end up in my permanent collection. Whether you are a student requiring this text or a small/business owner or someone looking to start a business, this book is for you. EXCELLENT MUST HAVE information for the entrepreneur! Many, many highly intelligent and creative people start businesses and they fail not due to a poor idea or lack of ability, but a lack of planning and cohesive strategy. This book will help you lay out a winning plan for your business and mitigate many risks and pitfalls that others have learned the hard way. About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. This book presents both the art and science behind pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling. Using a building-block approach, the author starts from linear and nonlinear models at the individual level and proceeds to develop more complex linear and nonlinear mixed effects models at the population level, with particular emphasis on showing the interrelationships between the various model types. The theory behind the methods are illustrated using real data drawn from the literature and from the author’s own experiences in drug development. Data are analyzed using a variety of software, including SAS, WinNonlin, SAAM II, and NONMEM. A key component of the book is to show how models are accepted and rejected, ultimately leading to a useful and informative model that can be utilized using computer simulation to answer "what-if" questions.

This is a remarkable book - a single-author monograph covering a difficult and large field. Dr Bonate has the industry experience to write authoritatively about real problems in PK/PD modeling, and includes a few valuable examples that delve deeply into the problems that will be encountered in real projects. Overall, I recommend this to anyone willing to do the work to read it.
Complaints are minor, and feel a bit unfair to even mention. Firstly, the book could have used an editor. A few sections are a bit off-topic (for example, a tour of ECGs with misinformation about lead nomenclature, multiple typos and some grammatical errors/imprecision, use of abbreviations before they are defined (common with cut/paste during revision), and an absolutely dreadful index - typical of modern-day books in the technical medical arena - use the ToC to find things instead. Dr Bonate has a spectacular grasp of mathematics compared with this reviewer (an MD and physicist by background) - very few medical people will be able to keep up with the theoretical presentations. Statisticians will probably be ok with the assumed knowledge base, PK people perhaps... But he makes a good effort at helping guide the reader, if diligent, through arcana and traps alike, freely offering very valuable tips and rules of thumb of the sort that can only be gleaned by suffering through simulations and fittings. I would have appreciated a few more simple examples first, before delving into things like 'Generation of Weibull Random Variates', just to pull a (random) example - but for advanced practitioners, the deep-dives may be the most valuable aspect.
I personally found the book interesting enough to read it cover to cover, and appreciated the human touch in the Preface that captured some of the immense effort this must have been to complete. In summary, for anyone really serious about trying to understand and contribute to PK/PD analysis, this is an excellent book to own and consult frequently.

Book with a great chapter about modeling

I have been teaching modeling and simulation for several years. By itself, Chapter 1: "The Art of Modeling", is simply an excellent overview of the topic; and not only applies to pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling, but to modeling in general. It covers the usual suspects: what is a model, types of models, properties of a useful model, model development process, goodness-of-fit criteria and metrics, and model validation. Furthermore, gives a good introduction to subtle but important topics, such as: model discrimination criteria (AIC, F-test, etc.), identifiability of compartmental models, importance of effective communication and ethics in modeling. I have not gone through the details in all the other chapters, but given my good impression based in Chapter 1, I am sure that this textbook will become a must read to any serious modeler in the field of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic.

Great book for entry level PK/PD students

The author is well-known in the PK/PD modeling field. It is a reader-friendly book. It is very easy to understand. You would not be bored by the terminology. The author explained the theory and ideas by the simplest words. Actually, it is a very fun book. You are just like reading a story, not a boring science book.

This book is for students/professionals with adequate backgroup of PK/PD, math and statistics. It is especially useful for an entry level modeler or future modeler.

This ref. guide has been helpful. After reading the chapter in the Civil PE review book, this gives the highlights that will most likey be used for the exam. It's also nice to have the two references side by side for equations and tables so you don't have to flip between pages in one or the other.

Completely not worth the price

I was extremely shocked at how thin this book was and how little information and help this book provided me to prepare and use as a reference on the PE exam. During the whole exam, there was absolutely nothing in this book that was useful. Best advice I can give someone taking the PE exam and doing the construction depth is get a NCEES sample test. The questions from the sample test were the most similar in topics and difficulty as the actual exam. The CERM provided some help; however, this book did not. Save your money and avoid buying this.

This book's introduction features a humorous story of a man with a line of people behind him, who explains to his boss, "I can't find an efficient algorithm, but neither can all these famous people." This man illustrates an important quality of a class of problems, namely, the NP-complete problems: if you can prove that a problem is in this class, then it has no known polynomial-time solution that is guaranteed to work in general. This quality implies that the problem is difficult to deal with in practice.

The focus of this book is to teach the reader how to identify, deal with, and understand the essence of NP-complete problems; Computers and Intractability does all of those things effectively. In a readable yet mathematically rigorous manner, the book covers topics such as how to prove that a given problem is NP-complete and how to cope with NP-complete problems. (There is even a chapter on advanced topics, with numerous references.) Computers and Intractability also contains a list of more than 300 problems--most of which are known to be NP-complete--with comments and references.

On the difficulty of computers to deal with certain problems

All those who deals with Computer Science,
Mathematics and Engineering have to face the
reality that certain problems seem really hard
to solve. Even with the more sophisticated, and
technologically advanced among the currently
available computers---and among those that are to
come in the next several years---, it seems highly
likely that we cannot efficiently solve certain
specific problems.

A first well written and systematic account on
the hardness of this problems is the 1979 book on
the theory of NP completeness by Michael R. Garey
and David S. Johnson: Computers and
Intractability, A Guide to the Theory of
NP-Completeness (W.H. Freeman and Company, San
Francisco). It is amazing how, after all these
years, this book remains a fundamental one to be
introduced on what can be effectively and
efficiently solved by computers and above all on
what it seems not efficiently solvable,
independently of the advances of technology.
Other texts have been published after that one,
as for example the recent clear and complete
overview on what has been done and extensively
researched since then that has been given by
Christos H. Papadimitriou in his book
Computational Complexity (Addison-Wesley, 1994).
Nevertheless, the Garey-Johnson book---as it is
often familiarly called---remains the fundamental
book for a clear introduction to this central
problem of what is tractable by computers.

Starting from a very clear introduction to the
technical term "NP-Complete," and to how this
term gained importance for the description of the
algorithmic tractability of certain problems in
the early 70s, the book clearly defines, both in
an intuitive and then in a formal way, what it is
meant by the complexity of a problem. More than
that, this complexity is directly related to the
effective methods for solving problems
(algorithms) and thus to computers themselves.
The basic of the theory of NP-Completeness is
completely covered in the first 5 chapters,
beginning from a low-level introduction to some
of the central notions of computational
complexity and finally providing detailed
definitions describing proof techniques to prove
the hardness of certain problems. The remaining
two chapters provide an overview on two
alternative directions for further study. (The
both of them have been extensively investigated
in the following years.) Finally, the appendix
contains more than 300 main entries on
NP-Complete and NP-Hard problems, and this last
part of the book is continuously referenced in
journal and conference papers on the subject.

The first chapter is definitely accessible also
to those that doesn't know so much mathematics,
or computers related stuff, and thus the book is
recommendable to those that are simply curious
about the things that can be solved with
computers.

Contemplating Abstract Thought

Every graduate CS student will probably encounter this book--it is a classic.
But long after that course in NP theory was over, the astonishment of a different aspect of the book remains.
One course assignment was the development of 15 polynomial reduction proofs (proving the computational complexity equivalence of pairs of NP problems). Part of these proofs can be simple geometric shapes, locations and connecting lines, which are defined as elements in the 2 problems. Because the elements are rigorously defined, the resulting geometric pictures model rigorous proofs of equivalence.
I was astounded at the power of such abstractions (which most programmers perhaps wouldn't even recognize as legitimate proofs). This experience underlined the fact that rigorous logical proof may take many outer forms, whether mathematical equations, formal symbolic logic proofs such as the Irving Copi notation, or simple geometric drawings.
Many veins of rich ore may be mined from this work, and only 1 of them is NP theory. But the reader must be ready to do battle with some difficult ideas, and mathematical notation which can obscure the creativity of the material covered. (For astounding creativity, examine Cooke's Theorem proving that the Satisfiability problem is NP-Complete!)

The most readable math book ever

I first read this book while researching heuristic techniques for reaching "good enough" solutions to the Travelling Salesman problem. "Computers and Intractability" was a breath of fresh air. It was as rigorous as any mathematical treatise, but written in a way that even a non-math major could understand. If you ever want to know why computers are so buggy, you'll know the mathematical reason for this within the first few pages of this book. By the time you reach the end, you'll never trust cryptography to absolutely, without a doubt, keep data secure for long, if at all.

Viet Thanh Nguyen was born in Vietnam and raised in America. He is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the academic books Race and Resistance and Nothing Ever Dies. He is a cultural critic-at-large for the Los Angeles Times and teaches English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He lives in Los Angeles.

A Classic Dark Comedy about War

The narrator of "The Sympathizer," by Viet Thanh Nguyen is the son of a Vietnamese woman and a French priest. Sent as a young man to Occidental College in Los Angeles, he is also an expert in American Studies and speaks flawless English. After returning to Vietnam, he becomes a captain in the army serving as aide de camp to a General. Secretly he is a spy for the communist revolution. As he tells his story, from narrowly escaping Saigon with the General in 1975 to life as a refugee in Los Angeles to working as a consultant to "The Auteur" on a film about Vietnam shot in the Philippines and finally to Thailand, we discover he is actually writing his "confession" to a commandant in a prison camp back in Vietnam.

The captain's otherness allows him to see Vietnam and America with a clarity that enlightens us as readers. While much of his story is devoted to how badly Americans understood the Vietnamese people, he also skewers partisans on both sides of the divide within his home country. His encounters with military, political and academic experts of all sorts reveal the ideological blinders that shaped their beliefs and horrific violence of the war. In the end, though, the story is about his struggle to come to terms with his own participation in that violence. What he did and did not do weigh heavily on his conscience.

Though his story is a serious one, Nguyen writes with a comic touch that belies the tragedy all around. "The Sympathizer" deserves comparisons with "Catch 22" as a classic dark comedy about war.

A powerful tragic novel - 4+

"The Sympathizer" was published exactly 40 years after the fall of Saigon to Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces and the effective end of the 10-year old conflict. The impact of that war is still felt, to some degree, in the U.S. On the other hand, when Americans visit Vietnam (northern or southern regions), they only rarely hear any mention of the war and they see a country dramatically transformed physically, in many ways. While the form of national government there is still officially communist, there is abundant proof that the economy is solidly capitalist. As long as 15 years ago, I asked a ranking member of an official delegation visiting Washington about this and his comment was that while the North had won the "civil war", the South had won the soul of the whole country--meaning that the Vietnamese have always been independent-minded, small land holders and capitalists at heart throughout a history of at least 2000 years.

I mention all of the above to point out the irony that is inherent in this novel. "The Sympathizer" is blind to the present as it chronicles the stories of several members of the South Vietnamese forces at the very end of the war (1975) into the early 1980s. The central character among them is the right hand man of a powerful general--the acting head of the national police in the waning days of the Saigon government--whose personal history puts him at odds with all daily reality. He was born a Northerner--therefore existentially suspect by all Southerners; he is half-French-therefore someone to be disdained by the instinctively atavistic and/or racist Vietnamese; he is a mole for the Viet Cong in the midst of the Saigon power structure; he is U.S. educated--forcing him to hold some admiration for the country he is working against and making him (mostly against his will) more self-critical of his own society and culture; he is an exile in the U.S. after the fall of Saigon--a place he hates and admires at the same time. Ultimately, he becomes the prototype of a man without a country and the archtypical cynic. All that happens in this striking novel about the tragedy of war and its aftermath revolves around this brilliantly conceived character.

As engrossing as this book was for me, I can't say that it was easy to read at all times. The driving themes of loss, betrayal, lack of compassion, and paucity of hope for the future are hard for the reader to deal with in a long novel. This was even more difficult for me as i have known and loved the country first hand in some of its worst days of trouble and find it difficult to see much merit in the U.S. intervention and prolongation of what was essentially a civil war. I wonder if author Viet Thanh Nguyen has another book in mind that would take his protagonist in "The Sympathizer" into the present.

In any event, this is a fascinating and worthwhile story even without any knowledge of the time setting. Highly recommended.

Engrossing, But Unconvincing

"The Sympathizer" is a brilliant novel, but it fell flat for me. Its hero -- or anti-hero -- isn't quite convincing in his role(s).

The novel is presented as the memoir of a young officer in the South Vietnamese army and secret police during the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese Communist army. He is a traitor, a secret Communist operative, who routinely sends all of the confidential information he receives to his boyhood buddy, a Communist intelligence officer also hidden within the South Vietnamese army.

In addition to his emotional confusion -- posing as an anti-communist while actually helping the Communists -- the anti-hero is also biracial -- his father was a French Roman Catholic priest who seduced his teenage Vietnamese mother. He has grown up being insulted by many Vietnamese as a "bastard."

Allegedly, his dual ethnic identity makes him a better spy -- treated with suspicion by all, he is the last to be suspected of any crimes -- it's just assumed that a 'bastard' will be grateful for his employment and loyal. His friendly, non-judgmental manner and willingness to listen have made him the "sympathizer."

The book is well-written, with vivid evocations of the weather, culture, people and atmosphere of wartime Saigon, and the Vietnamese refugee groups in America and Asia after the war. This is the material of a gripping psychological thriller, but the author chose to write the book as a black comedy.

The problem with the book is that even with the greater latitude given by the black comedy genre, the protagonist does not come across as a real Communist operative or as a 1970's Vietnamese. To remain a "sleeper agent" for years requires profound ideological convictions and commitment, but the novel's protagonist is very cynical about everything and dotes on the West's alcohol, sex and material comforts.

He seems seldom or never to have read any Communist texts -- the first quotations that appear in his head in most situations are from Western or Vietnamese pop songs. The tone of the memoirs is cool, remote, post-modern -- the author doesn't convey the intensity of the Communists of that era, who were very heavily indoctrinated and passionate.

I remember the Vietnam War vividly, and the novel is not written in a 1970's voice. There's a lot of disguised sociological commentary on problems of race, gender, etc., that are made from a viewpoint not common in that era, though very common now.

The author is a Gen X Vietnamese-American academic, who came to the U.S. as a child with his parents. It's clear that he's done tons of research on the Vietnam War and has listened diligently to many stories from Vietnamese who lived through it. His anti-hero feels like a coolly detached Gen X or Millenial suddenly dropped back about 40 years in time.

The novel will be of interest to Vietnam War history buffs, military readers of all types, and people interested in the history of Vietnam. I think it would have worked better as a "return to former homeland by child of exiles" type novel, where the author's irony and distance from his subject would have meshed better with the black comedy format.

About the Author
Becky Harling is a sought-after speaker and the author of several books. Her degree in biblical literature, as well as her experience as a missionary, women’s ministries director, and survivor of breast cancer and sexual abuse, bring depth to her message. Becky’s husband, Steve, is pastor at Foothills Community Church in Arvada, Colorado. Becky and Steve have four grown children and four grandchildren.

Effective Devotional!

I found THE 30 DAY PRAISE CHALLENGE, by Becky Harling, to be an incredible inspiration in my spiritual life. Confession, though: it took me 48 days to complete this challenge. I know, right? Slacker!

Anyway. I wasn't sure going in how I was going to manage the song portion. I did eventually decide on Youtube as a resource. And I did end up buying some of the songs here on Amazon. And some days I used my own praise songs. I was a little hesitant about using Youtube as a resource though. My general approach to Youtube and full songs is that I will listen to a full song there without qualm. But if I find myself going back for a second listen then I just pay the $.99 (or 1.29. inflation!) for the song. A better option for anyone reading this book might be something like Spotify. Which might not have everything but I *think* everything on there is licensed and legal. Or you could do a Pandora praise channel and go random. Or just use worship music you already have. I would just suggest that readers go into this aware that they will want to work out these details ahead of time. And Harling does provide a complete song list separate from each day's reading, which is very helpful.

I love how this challenge turned my focus to thanks and praise. Prayer comes easier to me now than it used to... well. There are always times when I'm tired and tempted to skip prayer time. Or I get to the end of a busy day and just can't seem to bother. It was surprising to me to realize that a short and simple "I praise You and thank You for getting me through this day" could lead to a longer spontaneous prayer and refreshed spirit. God does the heavy lifting.

And after reading this book, I am trying to make a prayer of praise and thanks my first response to daily crises and aggravations as well. This is slow going, of course :) But God is faithful and I am confident that in Him this work will be completed!

I also keenly feel the absence of this book now that it is completed. I have a nebulous notion to continue my daily praise journal, which I began in Scrivener during this challenge. In fact, Harling included resources in the back of the book. Those would be an excellent kicking off point.

Great Reminder the Importance of Praise

I LOVED this book! The author shares her personal story and the challenge her mentor gave her, to praise God 20 minutes every day even though she was facing cancer treatment. What she learned she is now teaching us in this straight forward, easy to follow, Scripture based book.

One of the things I liked about the book is the author says early on not to get into legalism. If you miss a day don't sweat it read tomorrow. She's also clear that the songs she's picked are some of her favorites, if they don't work for the reader find something else. Just find something that you can praise God with.

Each day opens with a scripture and an invitation. The invitation is a series of scriptures that the author has personalized so they are written as if God is saying them directly to you. Next is a section called Listen, where the author suggests worship songs for you to listen to as you mediate on the scripture or praising God for some aspect suggested by the author. This is followed by a prayer that the author has written out based on scripture. Oftentimes there are blanks for you to insert the thing you are struggling with. Finally, the author encourages the reader to journal. Again, she gives guidelines of something to journal about, but reminds the reader he or she is free to write whatever they feel led to.

This would be a great book for a new Christian who may be struggling with how to pray. I think it would also be good for the Christian who feels stuck in rut in their prayer life or someone facing a difficult situation. I appreciate how the author put the focus on praising God with everything based on scriptures.

Pros and Cons .....

As other reviewers have noted, this book is divided into 30 chapters to be read for 30 days of praise to God. Each chapter is based on a topic to help you sort of springboard into your own personal praise time. What I love is the author's desire to aid others in a session of praise with their heavenly Father. What I'm a little leery about is when the author "talks for God" and writes a little section as if God was speaking directly to the reader. This is my personal opinion, but it's a bit of a turn off. I don't doubt the author has good intentions, and I'm not saying these pieces of text aren't something God would say. I'm just recommending the reader proceed with caution and if he/she does read these daily sections, to determine if they are scripture based and pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
