Best of the Three Volume Set...

Morris Kline is one of the best math writers of all time. His books are intended for folks with only the most basic math, and he then uses physical and intuitive analogies to explain what's going on "beneath" the equations. MANY of his books are now available in inexpensive Dover editions like this one, just put Morris Kline in the search bar at the top of any Amazon page!

This book starts with "modern" topics like projective geometry after leaving off with calculus in the second volume. Like his intuitive calculus book, it also reads like an adventure novel! This is a MUST buy if you're interested in the history of math. His Mathematics and the Physical World book (Mathematics and the Physical World (Dover books explaining science)) is one of the all time best introductions to advanced math ever written, from High School to beginning undergrad. ALL his books make any other text MUCH more clear, due to his wonderful "real world" examples and palpable enthusiasm.

The cool thing is that, unlike his books written in the 60's, this volume was 1990, just at the "reincarnation" of projective geometry and other "historical" math phenomena like quaternions, in new trends like video games and 3D computer animation. Still very relevant, and one of the best ways to learn more advanced math, due to Kline's wonderful teaching style, intuitive explanations, and comparisons with "everyday" physical happenings that FINALLY (at least in my case) helps you get what that equation really "means!"

If you see reviews trashing this or any other math book due to Kindle, don't fault the book! In general ALL e-readers (not just Kindle) still have trouble with LaTex, especially older "scanned" texts! If the book has complex exponential equations, just assume they'll be problematic as e-books, especially if the edition is pre-2005. Of course I agree with reviewers who point this out, but it is sad that it effects the overall rating of the BOOKS themselves, which deserve many more stars!!!

A thorough exposition of the history of mathematics for mathematicians. For non-mathematicians, I recommend Mathematics for the Nonmathematician by the same author. This will be more accessible to the layperson.

A wonderful low-FODMAP cookbook with excellent photography!

My wife has been having digestive issues and her gastroenterologist recommended that she try a low-FODMAP diet. So we looked for low-FODMAP information and cookbooks at Amazon and selected this book. It turned out to be a treasure trove of well-researched information on low-FODMAP diets, the reasons that this diet will help, and delicious recipes that make this rather severe diet very palatable!

The book is soft-bound, but the cover is a very nice-feeling, heavy material that should stand up well to heavy use. In addition, it has fold-over flaps on both the front and back that make very handy bookmarks.

The introductory chapters are obviously very well researched and provide a great overview of why and how this cookbook was developed. We learned so much about why FODMAPs are a problem and how to avoid them in your diet. The recipe sections are very well laid out, making it easy to assemble the ingredients and prepare the recipes. And the photography! This author is a gifted food photographer – the photos are easily among the best I have ever seen. The colors and textures of the food just pop! The pictures are a great incentive to prepare the dishes with the same style and artistry of the author.

I will make special mention of a few of the recipes that we have tried so far. The standout is the Maple Marinated Salmon with Sesame Spinach Rice. Low-FODMAP or not, this is the best salmon recipe we have ever had. Highly recommended! If soups are your thing, the Chicken Stock (Bone Broth) is the best beginning for chicken soup ever. It is loaded with rich flavor that makes a simply great soup. We simmer the stock in a slow cooker for 24 hours, then divide it up into 1-cup containers and freeze it for future use. What’s dinner without dessert? The Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies are a hit around this house! Delicious!

In conclusion, this is a great cookbook, loaded with delicious recipes and great photography. You will not be disappointed!

Fantastic recipes! Informative and clear explanation of the low FODMAP diet!!

This book is amazing!! It is not only a cookbook but an informative dietary guide for anyone who has digestive disorders.The book's organization is clear and concise with a nice table of contents making it easy to read and absorb. The author, Dianne Benjamin, gives a clear explanation of FODMAPS and nutrition. She then outlines the qualities of a low-FODMAP diet and provides basic information concerning this type of diet plan. Ms. Benjamin's recipes are delicious and also simple to follow. Also the book lies flat making it easy to read as you cook. It should also be noted that is worth buying the book just to look at the photography!! Ms. Benjamin is the author and the photographer!! I recommend The Low-FODMAP Cookbook for anyone. I don't have stomach issues and I still like the recipes!

Love the mandarin orange and walnut salad

One thing I did try is the cranberry orange scones; I'm a baker and don't measure things but I DID follow instructions and measured everything. It never turned into dough no matter how long I stirred it. All new, fresh ingredients. Ended up throwing it into a bread pan and reduced the temp. We'll see. Will keep trying. Love the mandarin orange and walnut salad; making it tonight. Still lots to try and cookbook is well put together; pictures are wonderful. Thank you.

For a beginner it's a great guide

I'm a beginner and I think it's a great step-by-step how to. I can't draw a face in 15 minutes YET, but I think that like any art, drawing well and quickly comes with practice. This book provides an approach for seeing form and adding facial and head structures (eyes, nose, etc), along with shape and expression. After looking through similar beginner portrait books, I'm glad I found this one.

Secularization as Seen by a "Nervous" Christian Sociologist

In his new book sociologist Peter Berger’s recants half of his original single factor theory that societal modernization inevitably leads to secularization. Berger writes we don’t live in an age of unbelief but of doubt that often leads to extremes of moral relativism and fundamentalism of both secular and religious varieties. However, Berger believes most people live in the “pragmatic middle” between fanaticism and nihilism.

To Berger it “doesn’t make sense to talk about pluralism if people don’t talk to each other”. Wherever they do this talking pluralism “cognitively contaminates” their worldview.

Reversing the modernist notion that religion is a form false consciousness Berger says: “what is needed is a theory of secular false consciousness (‘why you are an a___hole’) and of cognitive privilege (‘why I am not’)”. He says some of the secular attempts at such theories are “quite funny”.

Berger describes those non-pragmatic secularists as: “deracinated, individuated, sophisticated, BUT very nervous” and ipso facto threatened by religious persons. Secularists seem to want pluralism less than those who are religious and are surrounded by secularism everywhere.

To Berger, “fundamentalism Balkanizes a society” but “relativism undermines the moral consensus without which no society can survive”. Although Berger doesn’t say this, it may be surmised from his book that in a modern pluralistic society religious institutions are often more secular and secular institutions more religious like.

Sociologist Detlef Pollack (Germany) writes that Berger’s theory is “unconvincing” because secularization still “undermines” religious belief and thus isn’t much different than conventional secularization theory. Contra Berger, Pollack says:

1) “in a widely secularized society many do not make a religious choice at all;
2) Berger’s “Compatibility Theory”of the co-existence of religious and secular discourse is like a married couple who refuse to talk politics because they have different political party allegiancs; and 3) in modern countries religious beliefs are “vague, diffuse and indetermined” rather than falling into the “fundamentalist” or “relativist” camps.

But Pollack’s criticisms seem to support rather than refute Berger’s theory. Contra Pollack, one may not need religion but one can choose it especially at times of life when an “other reality” invades one’s everyday reality, such as love or death. Married couples that are politically incompatible may nonetheless complement each other. Berger says that most people live in the pragmatic middle of the vagueness of civil religion.

Purdue sociologist Fenggang Yang says Berger’s new pluralization theory was already in place 20 years ago in the work of sociologist R. Stephen Warner who wrote that religion in the U.S. is “an open market system” (“Work in Progress Toward a New Paradigm for the Sociological Study of Religion in the U.S.” – 1993). However, over 50 years ago Berger wrote a prescient article “A Market Model for the Analysis of Ecumenicity” in the journal of Social Research (1963, Vol. 30, Issue 2). Berger has been the lead proponent that religious pluralism and institutional market-like competition augments and mediates modernization and secularization long before 1993.

"certitude" in religion and religious commentary.

Jack Mendohlson wrote of such many decades ago. Why is this seeking of certitude in a contingent world not seen as
essential and explanatory of something in characterizing religious views? Why do we ignore 'certitude' in offering ponderous
explanations of modernism and post modernism?

Yes, yes there is an abundance of discussion of relativism. But how can so many of the illuminati offer their condemnations...mostly...
of 'relativism' in the modern world without contrasting the 'certitude' we inherit from the ancient world? Is it easier to make a living by teaching and preaching about the one and not the other?
