What REALLY happened in July of 1914?

With any controversial historical subject, looking at the original sources is vital.
During and after World War I there was a propaganda war in which each side tried to prove that the other side deliberately started the war. Everyone published documents, frequently altered, to prove their innocence and the enemies' guilt.
But after WWII, the raw source material finally began to become available. Imanuel Geiss was a pioneer in researching the archives. Here he collects the most important documents on the outbreak of war, showing how Austria-Hungary was determined to destroy Serbia, and why (hint: it wasn't the assassination of Franz Ferdinand; that was just an excuse); how Germany deliberately provoked Russia to mobilize; and how Britain reluctantly agreed to go to war.
For the English speaker, there is no better introduction to the history of the origins of WWI than this book, with the possible exception of Annika Mombauer's THE ORIGINS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR (it has more documents, but many of the documents are abridged, and the print is tiny). Mombauer's and Geiss's books will immunize you against most of the false information and downright lies that still circulate concerning the decisions for war in 1914.
It's a great regret that Geiss's JULIKRISE UND KRIEGSAUSBRUCH 1914; EINE DOKUMENTENSAMMLUNG was never translated from the German, and a scandal that JULY 1914 has gone out of print.

This book contains the Official diplomatic notes and correspondance between the major and minor players leading up to the outbreak of WW 1.

A War To Start Many Subsequent Wars

Given this year's 100th anniversaries of the start of the Great War, it's commendable that the publisher has seen fit to reprint this classic collection. A student of Fritz Fischer, the 1960s' main purveyor of Germany's war responsibility, Geiss assembled the key documents from the diplomatic crisis of June-August 1914. He endorses Fischer's overall views in his helpful editorial material. But the documents generally speak for themselves and allow readers to reach their own conclusions. Both central disputes --- over who started the war, & whether it was inevitable --- will likely never be resolved. The Great War profoundly influenced what came after (even more than WW2 in my opinion). Direct access to the primary sources is essential to permit informed knowledge of the past, enabling informed citizens worldwide to understand how the paths to war are chosen. And hopefully to avoid such tragedies in the future.
