Good book.

Good book. As a criminal defense attorney I find this book useful to help explain to DUI clients how cops will likely testify regarding the things cops say they observed while administering field sobriety tests to my clients. The book lists the various "validated" cues that cops are supposed to look for when administering common field sobriety tests. It also explains some of the science and theory underlying the various tests. Many clients think that they did well on the field sobriety tests. Unfortunatley, many DUI defendant's do not know what the cop was really looking for when administering the field sobriety tests. This book helps explain that.

Was hoping for something more

A little disappointed with this one. Good content, however when I think of a book that is titled advanced dui investigation then I expect more than a chapter covering different drug categories and effects. Concidering the price and the lack of valuable court testimony (this book reviewed general testimony that had nothing to do with ovi material that will be asked by an attorney in trial or motion to suppress) this left me disappointed.

About the Author
Professor Halgin received his Ph. D. from Fordham University, and completed a 3-year fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, prior to joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts in 1977. He is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist and has had over two decades of clinical, supervisory, and consulting experience. At the University of Massachusetts, his course in Abnormal Psychology is one of the most popular offerings on campus, attracting an enrollment of more than 500 students each semester. In recent years, he has also offered this course at Amherst College and Smith College. His teaching has been recognized at the university and national level. A University of Massachusetts Alumni Distinguished Professor, he was honored with the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and his teaching was recognized by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In April 2003, his teaching was highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Professor Halgin is the author of more than fifty journal articles and book chapters in the fields of psychotherapy, clinical supervision, and professional issues in psychology.

The volume on "Fractional Distillation" was written in the hope that it would be of assistance to chemists in overcoming the difficulties so frequently met with in the laboratory, not only in the actual carrying out of the fractional distillation of a complex mixture but also in the interpretation of the results obtained.

The last copy was sold shortly after the declaration of war, and the question then arose whether a revised second edition of the book in its original form should be published. It was thought, however, by the Publishers that it would be wiser to extend the scope of the work so as to include distillation on the large scale as carried out in the manufacture of important products.

That this change in the character of the book was really advisable became more and more evident as the war increased in intensity and magnitude, because of the immense importance of such materials as acetone, toluene, petrol, glycerine, and so on, the production of which involved processes of distillation on an enormous scale, and for some of which new sources or methods of formation had to be sought and investigated.

It was obvious that the larger book could only be of real value if the sections on manufacturing processes were written by chemists thoroughly conversant with the various subjects dealt with, and it was eventually decided that I should edit the book if I could secure the co-operation of experts in the different branches of manufacture.

In these preliminary negotiations I received most valuable assistance from my friends, Professor F. E. Francis, D.Sc, Ph.D., and Professor W. E. Adeney, D.Sc, and my sincere thanks are especially due to Professor Francis for the great interest he has taken in the production of the book.

Unfortunately the heavy pressure of work entailed on all chemists by the war caused serious delay in commencing the book, and progress has necessarily been slow.

By far the best and most carefully crafted reference book-a work of passion

As a lover of Swiss Army Knives, and simply intrigued by its history and variations, this book looked promising. It is in fact simply amazing in depth as well as breadth. Chances are that if you are even considering this type of book , you're part of the SAK (Swiss Army Knife) choir-well this is is the Hymnal.

Lets start with what is has: a great and interesting history on both Wenger and Victorinox, and a bit about Switzerland, all as they relate to the development of the knife we love; material and making of the knifes-with a great deal of specifics on hardness and other technical points-again told in an interesting manner; the development of the original Officers knife and how it came to the present models; the knife itself, including changes and progress, tools, shields the works!; how to use and care for a knife-and even if you've used knifes for decades, I promise you will learn something you don't know; comparing the Big 2 makers-objectively and beautifully; improvised uses and clever thoughts on tools and not so obvious uses; how to repair and modify the knifes; accessories, and again some clever easy to do helps; and true stories and tales of wonder-really good stories.

To those of us with short attention spans, or simply who love the aesthetic-and like to look at the pictures, there are LOTS of photos, and lots of comparisons of tools from both makers, as evolving over decades -perfect for the SAK geek, or even those that simply love the knife, or use it as a daily tool. Also, of interest, are photos of the myriad of imitations as well as counterfeits.

I received my copy late Friday and had finished it by Sunday morning. My overview of topics may sound on the academic side, but its simply an amazing book; this book is well written and not only interesting, but sometimes humorous. It gives detailed comparisons of the models and their tools, changes of names, comparisons and similarities between the makers, and so much more.

It is a reference guide, simply. And whats in store? How do you actually use a SAK as a soldering tool? How about a make shift cross bow? How about fixing it when you break it? How to sharpened it? The best part, this author has taken the time to have first hand knowledge of what he writes-astonishing first hand tests of tools, etc.

The book is nicely printed, with excellent photos and color quality too.

A word to the wise-get yours now-as word gets out this will be sold out.

Perfect companion for your perfect companion

I've been a proponent of the little red knife for years along with many others. We have discussed forever a book like this and finally Mike Young has come through for us. The Swiss Army Knife Owners Manual is filled with history, technical information, and specs. Lots of great color photos that compare Vics and Wengers as well as the evolution of tools through different generations of each maker. I really like the charts listing the tools for different models. If you have carried a SAK for years or are just developing an interest you will enjoy and appreciate Mike's book. I got two.

A wealth of information.

Having been in a collector and trader in a number of categories of weapons and armor, I found that this book is a wealth of information but it has proved a bit difficult to extract it.
The format of the binding (perfect-bound paperback) makes simply reading the pages a chore since it is so tight and the page material so heavy that you are constantly fighting to keep it open, particularly when you may have a knife in hand and want to compare it to the info.
Overall, it's a good book and apparently the only one of its kind available that goes into this much detail. I hope that in future editions, if any, the author might consult his publisher and perhaps consider larger pages with lighter weight stock.
I recommend it unreservedly to any fan of the SAK and its variants.

About the Author
DR. JUSTIN PATERSON (Thames Ditton, Surrey, England) is a drummer, record producer, and teacher of drumming and music technology. He worked as a session drummer for many years before turning to programming, sound design, and production. Since 2004, he has worked at the London College of Music, part of the University of West London, where he leads the MA course in Advanced Music Technology. He has published numerous research papers and given master class on drum programming for the Audio Engineering Society in the UK. He has also been involved in software development.

Due to the pervasive presence of drawing in the evolution of design ideas, designers often do not clearly understand how their drawings affect their ideas. Envisioning Architecture: An Analysis of Drawing explores all aspects of how the drawing process translates as well as transforms design ideas.
