Everyone should do this study!!!

Everyone should buy this book and organize groups of individuals to complete this together. This puts basic principles into place and removes all of the legalistic, religiously overzealous, forceful teachings that people that have not experienced God try to accomplish. Experiencing God is how we were intended to respond.

This is a great study for those looking to her from God. But if you do this study please stay in step with what the author suggests in the leadership guide. This will be my third study and I look forward to it, the reason I am doing it again is I'm a pastor and am doing it with my church. You will not regret this study, but try to keep your group to 7-8. Highly recommend for those seeking God, Jesus Christ and an understanding of God's Holy Spirit.

You can't afford not to

Doug Fields has written a short, to-the-point, practical yet reflective book on why learning to say, "No", and then practicing saying it, is essential to staying healthy in a ministry leadership position. Although Fields is a youth minister and writes with youth ministers as his primary audience, this book applies to anyone in ministry--paid or unpaid, full-time, part-time, or volunteer.

Early on he writes, "I want to challenge you to say no more often so you can say yes to what matters most" (18). He develops this idea throughout the rest of the book. For those who may be in too deep and not know how to recognize it, Fields points out some warning signs that can help you discern if you're addicted to busyness, or if you're putting doing ministry above loving God (for example, consistently counting the time you spend preparing a talk or small group lesson as your own personal devotional time) . Having pointed out some signs, he also talks about practical action steps you can take to bring things back under control.

Jesus said, "Apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). The temptation is always there for the minister to do more, be more, accomplish more, and say "yes" more. Yet as you do this, you risk damaging your first love: your relationship with Christ. Fields's short book is a call back to that first love with a clear escape route from any busyness, overworking, or people-pleasing that may have entrapped you.

Say Yes To This Book

In What Matters Most, Doug Fields says, "You need to learn to say no to many good things and wonderful people so you'll have space to say yes to God, yes to the important people in your life [like your family and friends:], yes to priorities - yes to what matters most" (p. 21).

What does matter most to you?
I think that's why I like Fields' book so much. He doesn't presume to know what your top priorities are, because they are different for everyone. Fields offers helpful questions and thoughts to get to the heart of what matters to you. Once that's clarified, Fields offers practical ideas for making certain those things are not pushed out of your life by other people or tasks.

*note: In my opinion, the book which unpacks out this topic a little more fully is Choosing to Cheat by Andy Stanley.

He has said it all before

Doug Fields is alway great but this is already covered in his other books. It is good material and a neat little booklet but costly for its size. Could have been a booklet sold for a couple bucks.

How I learned to ski

I started to ski five years ago at the age of 46 when my wife, an avid accomplished skier, insisted. After numerous group and private lessons, I was probably a 5 on the standard 10 scale. It was discouraging. Then, I discovered Lito's books, tapes and lessons. Now, I'm a 9 on a 10 scale able to easily ski on all but difficult black diamond bumps. Everything else is a breeze and fun. Better skiing is not harder, it's just different. Lito's book takes you step by step, stage by stage, one phase at a time. It's so simple it's remarkable that no other book has come close. For example, since skiing generally requires all your weight on one foot at a time, which foot is it? Most people, even accomplished skiers, answer either the uphill or downhill ski. This answer is both right and wrong. As Lito explains, it is the outside ski which could be uphill at one point and downhill at another point. Next, he explains how and why shifting weight to the other ski must be completed early and dynamically. This is actually simple somewhat like a dance step. The book continues on with secret after secret until the cumulative result is advanced skiing. After five or six days following his advice, it really came together. I'll never forget that time down a black diamond slope using his techniques naturally and easily. At the bottom, I looked back at the formerly imposing slope and realized that it had been a breeze. Looking to the ski, I said thank you God and Lito. Since then, fear and trepidation (except for those black diamond bumps) have forever been excised from my skiing. If you're tired of stopping at the top of a tough slope trying to build up your courage, you've apparently never read Lito's book, seen his tapes and/or implemented his advice. After reading and trying almost everything else, Lito's book allowed the easy opportunity to enjoy this incredible sport. Once again, thank you Lito.

Useful, but obsolete

This book is copyright 1986. It is about 30 years old as of this writing.

I will grant that I learnt a lot from reading this book. Lito made me more aware of some of the fundamental movements of skiing, but I felt like something was missing. The most difficult slopes still seemed to require something that I was missing. I'm talking about the slopes that have knee-high bumps, trees, big rocks, and chair-lift poles all on one trail with seemingly tiny space in between. On such slopes, try as I may to follow Lito's advice, I struggled, tumbled, and feared for my safety.

Let me point out that Lito wrote in this book that skis had improved incredibly in the years before the writing of the book. I imagined that skis must have continued to improve afterwards, and I was right!

Yesterday, I visited a ski resort where I have a season pass, and an hour before closing time, I noticed that they had set up a kiosk for a promotion: a free one-run ski lesson. I knew that it was a promotion, but I signed up, figuring that I had nothing to lose, and a few minutes later, I was riding the chair lift with an instructor. I told him that I wanted to learn to ski bumps better. I told him that I had learnt from Lito that it's a good idea to practice tight turns on easier terrain before attempting them on steep bumps, but it just wasn't working out for me. I told him that I had learnt from a 30 year old book. I talked about how Lito recommended practicing shifting weight from ski to ski by lifting the inside ski in the air during a turn. He seemed amused and exclaimed that Yes, this is how you learned to ski in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. He then explained something new to me, confirming my suspicion that skis do more than they do when this was written.

The instructor explained to me that in addition to turning by shifting weight from ski to ski, one can turn the edges into the powder to turn without shifting weight at all. He said that if you attempted this type of turn with 1980s skis, you would simply fall over, but today's skis allow you to use this technique to turn with much less effort.

Armed with this knowledge, I tried this technique on a blue slope and found it easy. I then tried it on a steep, wide, bumpy slope that I had frequently tumbled on. I was amazed at how much more comfortable and easy the skiing felt with this new technique. I was almost surprised when I realized that I had passed the most difficult part of the run. Finally, I tried it on a narrow bumpy run; it was not wider than several ski lengths and bumpy to boot. Using my edges in addition to the weight shifting, I felt almost at ease on this run that used to give me so much anxiety. I quickly became comfortable and confident that I could make quick, tight turns as needed.

In summary, yes, I learnt a good bit about skiing from this book, and the author writes well, but the knowledge is 30 years old, and I believe that for today's skier, there are better resources available.

I've been the classic, plateaued advanced-intermediate since I stopped taking lessons at 11 years old. I can ski almost anything here in Michigan, but once I get out West the groomers are all I can handle with confidence.

With a limited time remaining in the ski season, I decided to focus on chapters 2-4 and hit the slopes here at home. The author is good about laying out the big picture, before drilling down to any details, then putting it all back together at the end. I highly recommend picking up the short companion DVD so you can see what he is talking about.

After one night at the local mole hill, the basics seemed to translate almost immediately and I was carving those long and short-radius parallel arcs I'd always dreamed about. Took that experience up north to some harder terrain and while I still have some little things to work on, I can say with certainty that I skied better, and with a lot more speed and confidence, than I have in over a decade.

I'm saving the more advanced chapters on bumps, powder, etc. for later this year, when the tips will be fresher in my mind right before the season begins, but so far I've been very impressed with this book and I feel that the author has already helped me clean up my essential carving technique a lot.

About the Author

Thesis title: The Development of Human-Computer Interface Criteria for the Designer. 1982 BA, Chemistry, Duke University, Durham, NC.

Nathan Hartman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Graphics at Purdue University where he currently teaches undergraduate courses in 3D modeling, graphics standards, and product data management. He has also taught graduate courses covering advanced computer graphics technology topics, research methods, and measurement and evaluation. Nathan is Co-Director of the Purdue University Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Center of Excellence in the Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Purdue's Discovery Park. His research areas include the use of constraint-based CAD tools within the product lifecycle, the development of strategic knowledge in the use of 3D computer graphics tools, 3D data interoperability and exchange, and the use of virtual reality in PLM environments. Professor Hartman holds a Bachelor of Science in Technical Graphics and a Master of Science in Technology from Purdue University, and a Doctor of Education in Technology Education from North Carolina State University.

Gary Bertoline is the Associate Vice President for Visualization Computing. He formerly was Department Head and a Professor in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology. He is the co-founder of the Digital Enterprise Center in the School of Technology, and, in the 6 years he served as Department Head, he more than doubled enrollment, funded projects, and donations to the department. Prior to becoming department head he was on the faculty in Computer Graphics Technology for 4 years. Prior to joining the faculty at Purdue, Gary served three years as a faculty member in the College of Engineering and Department of Engineering Graphics at The Ohio State University.

Kindle app is crap for PC

I bought this about 2 weeks ago one night when I realized I did not have the right book for my Engineering class. So I figured no big deal, Amazon has a digital copy for Kindle. I had used E-books before so I purchased so that I could immediately start using it for my assignment that was due the next morning. I was SORELY surprised to find that the Kindle Desktop app for PC is HORRIBLE. The book itself is like a poor copy of the text. There are no actual page numbers, and even the PDF like pages are not even the same as the book. Oh but wait, there are location numbers at the bottom. So page 65 is actually like Location 5865 of 15404. This is not an exaggeration. The location numbers also jump up by 6 or 7 values as you scroll, so you can not just divide the total Location value by the number of should be pages, and then multiply by what page you need. Took me about 10 minutes to find the assignment because of this. Not sure if the Kindle programmers realize how faulty and useless this is yet. If I needed to use this on a daily basis I would have tried to swap for the Hard Book version. At least I could sell next semester and not be out $120!!!!

Composed very well, great pictorials and schematics

Had to have this text for a mandatory class at NCSU, it is composed very well and written with sufficient detail to enlighten. Contains a lot of visualizations, auxillary projections, isometric drawings, modeling...great book... font choice and overall readability is great, doesn't place strain on eyes.

Possesses a bunch of pictorials and illustrations in every chapter.

This book is just okay. I was really hoping that it would have more in-depth content oriented towards Solidworks, which was the program-of-choice for my drafting class. I think it thoroughly covers the most important concepts in drafting as well as technical drawing, but fails to show the reader how to specifically use a drafting program.

Overall, a solid introduction to drafting and graphics communications. However, unless you have assigned homework from this book, I don't think there is much content in here that someone couldn't figure out very easily.

This is a rather dull textbook, and you certainly would not want to read this cover-to-cover.

I bought this book after doing family history research while on my current deployment overseas. I'd found out that John W. Cotton served in the same Alabama Calvary Company, and from the same Alabama county, Coosa County as my own Great Great Great Grandfather and after readnig the book I found them both to be good friends and Mr. Cotton mentions my Grandfather numerous times in his letters to his wife. I can't even describe in words what this book means to me, and if your a Civil War buff I'm sure that you will enjoy it as well. You get a view of the war from a different perspective, not just from some printed textbook that forces you to come to a fixed conclusion about the war, but about the loneliness and isolation of the proud soldier, a son of Alabama, a common man believing in what he was fighting for til the end.

Interesting insight to a Southern farmer's life while away in the army. A beneficial aide to pulling together more of the history of this company and the regiment to which it belonged. A bit dissappointing as it did not provide more, none the less, a valued work as there are so few in existent. Would be mostly valued by those researching the 10th Confederate Cavalry.

MISSING PARENTS OF A BASKETBALL STAR

Brenda Slaughter is the preeminent star of a new women's professional basketball league scheduled to make its debut. Sports agent Myron Bolitar is asked to watch her, as she may be subject to threats related to her father Horace, whom she has fired as her agent, and who taught Myron, a former star hoopster himself, how to play the game. Brenda is black, smart, funny, independent, and at the same time she is about to embark on a pro career, studying to be a doctor.

Horace, who had a physical confrontation with his daughter when he was terminated is suddenly missing. But there is a larger family issue. Brenda's mother, Anita, had abandoned her daughter and Horace twenty years ago, several months after finding the body of Elizabeth Bradford, the late wife of a current candidate for Governor, Arthur Bradford. The woman slipped or fell off a balcony early one morning. Anita worked for the Bradford's as a maid, and when she disappeared, the drop dead beautiful domestic cleaned out Horace's life savings of just over five figures. Horace never found anyone else. The only person Anita has spoken to in all these years is her sister-in-law Mabel, and only then a couple of times.

While second generation money, Arthur Bradford plays rough. And the family has over the years, put cops in their pocket and thugs on their payroll. There is a coverup of something somewhere. This becomes apparent when Brenda's dormitory room is ransacked and letters from her mother are stolen, Myron takes it upon themself to find both of her parents, and unravel the complicated intertwining of families seemingly so disparate they would hardly be entangled so deeply.

There is additional motivation for Myron beyond getting the opportunity to represent a budding star. He finds himself incredibly attracted to Brenda, his heart leaping skyward whenever he is with her. That of course puts him in turmoil, for he is not the cheating kind, and lives with his girlfriend Jessica, beautiful and talented, but selfish in ways that Brenda could never be. Myron is oriented towards family, Jessica is jaundiced in that regard, not growing up ijn a stable, loving environment.

Those familiar with Myron Bolitar will recognize that he is different from the usual cop or private investigator. Myron does not keep his emotions within himself, he displays them openly to his friends, the strangely cold and violence-prone investment counselor Win, his colleague and best buddy Esperanza Diaz, and to his girlfriend, whom he loves but cannot get to stay in one place.

Harlan Coben seems to have seized the banner first raised by Ross MacDonald in the Lew Archer mysteries. Tangled and tattered families and deep secrets immersed in bloodlines from years past are at the root of the Bolitar mysteries. In One False Move, there is even a link between Myron's own father and the Bradfords, one that put Myron in danger when he was a child. Moral complexity and ambiguity hover over the story, as Myron has to deal with his feelings, many of them uncertain, on race, love, family, loyalty and personal ideals. And different from MacDonald, Coben creates characters, that are sharply witty as well. Only Bolitar could stick a sharp verbal needle into a thug who threatens him, even when the lout has a clear advantage.

Coben is a superior talent who keeps making Bolitar more interesting all the time.

Coben strikes again

Once again, Harlan Coben keeps the reader on the edge of his seat with the Myron Bolitar novel One False Move. Coben brilliantly twists his tale of murder and mystery, and as he always does, leads you to believe you have the case solved and then he slams you in the face with a surprise ending that hits you like a baseball bat, except your jaw is left in tact enough to hang open while you read the final pages. There perhaps hasn't been a finer murder-solving duo of Myron and Win since Holmes and Watson, as yet another page turner keeps you engrossed until the very end.

HARLAN COBEN COMES THROUGH....AS USUAL

I previously read one of Harlan Coben's books and was not that impressed for some reason, but something also told me to give him another try and I was certainly glad that I did. Harlan Coben is clearly one of the top tier/premier mystery writers for several reasons which are evident in this book as well as all of his Myron Bolitar books. Firstly, his style of writing makes the reading flow - it is not at all tedious. Secondly, his plots are intricate and interesting without being overly complex or bewildering. Thirdly, his characters are highly entertaining - Myron Bolitar is the sports rep/investigator/detective, and Win (Windsor Horne Lockwood III - for those who are into formalities) is the muscle - Win is incredibly wealthy, is not overtly threatening due to the fact that he is only five feet ten inches or thereabout, very fastidious and preppy in his appearance, but he is totally lethal - he lives in a world of black and white, no gray areas, and when warranted, acts first and asks questions or contemplates later - if ever. Myron and Win are very similar to Spenser and Hawk of Robert B. Parker as well as Elvis Cole and Joe Pike of Robert Crais. Very much like Spenser and Hawk, the repartee between Myron and Win is very entertaining. This book, in particular, also had a very intricate plot where you do not really know the killer until very near the end. Highly recommended.
