Leading is Art, by Terry Gurno

Most of us intuitively know that effectively leading people means helping those around us succeed. This is not revolutionary thinking and yet, in real time, can be hard to do. Preoccupied with our own success, the people we lead often become a source of frustration; we may even see them as a hindrance to our accomplishments.

Talented, educated, and successful leaders in this situation often rely on the science of leadership information, data, rational strategies and push aside the messy art of leading people.

Leading is Art and Leaders are Artists

Yet, it is in discovering and developing the unique qualities of those we lead that we find our true purpose as leaders. Returning to what we intuitively know to be true, we must see leadership as an art form, focusing our intention on bringing out the greatness in those we lead.

Leading is Art will help you reset and refocus on developing the mindset of putting others first and how by bringing out the best in others we become the leaders we were always meant to be. When we embrace our identities as leader/artist, our focus will shift from a life of external success to a life of internal significance.

The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there. -John Buchan

An Art Class You Don't Want to Miss!
By Scott
Books on leadership are not scarce! A quick internet search or a stroll through your local bookstore will bear out that truth! From opposite ends of the spectrum, both theorists and practitioners have written on the topic. Leading is Art by Terry Gurno is incredibly refreshing because it is drawn from the best of both of those worlds!

In this book, Terry draws from a lifetime of practical leadership experience as well as offering authoritative insight and best practices. He is a leader of leaders who "talks the talk" but also has "walked the walk". His experience and track record in shaping organizational cultures (both corporate and church), as well as coaching individual leaders uniquely positions him to address this critical topic. The book clearly reveals that he understands people and systems. That insight challenges the reader to re-frame their traditional concepts of leading in practical, actionable ways!

Leading is Art will challenge your thinking, sharpen your skills, and steel your resolve to impact and influence others for greatness! Beyond that, reading it will expose you to a dynamic leader, whose story will inspire and stretch you!

If you are a leader of an organization, a ministry, a family, or simply interested in personal development, I strongly recommend this book! It will motivate and equip you to next level leadership! ~Dr. Scott Hanberry

Practical Leadership Tools
By Dan
This book is game changer if you want to grow in influence. Every leader must learn to challenge themselves and grow. However, to make your organization grow and become great, the leader must focus on helping others win. Everyone has the capacity for greatness, it is up the leader to draw it out. Most leadership books focus on the science of leading people and organizations. While this is necessary information, it does not always translate into influence. This is the chief difference with Terry's book. It is intensely practical, and doable. I highly recommend this to any leader who wants to not just make their organization great, but the people around them great!

Dom's Guide To BDSM Vol. 2: 71 Submissive Training & Reconditioning Tips Any Dom/Master Must Know (Guide to Healthy BDSM) (Volume 2), by M

"Dom's Guide to BDSM" was specifically written for Doms/Masters. In Volume 2 of this series, we’re going to focus on how to better communicate with a sub, and how to go back and forth with role playing. We’re going to teach you how to express yourself, how to read your sub and look for cues, and how to go about getting a real life BDSM relationship started.

We’re also going to discuss how to train your sub accordingly and with a purpose. This is important and is an often-neglected part of the BDSM community. The highly sensationalized, “purely sexual” relationships you read about or see depicted in TV or movies is not the only type of relationship forged. Some relationships really are all about personal missions, self-improvement and getting in touch with suppressed inner feelings.

We will cover this as well as the most important part of BDSM dominance — having a plan. You will learn how to be an excellent Dom and it all starts with a few simple steps.

Note: If you have not read Volume 1 in this series (Dom's Guide To BDSM Vol. 1: 49 Must-Know Tips On How To Be The Perfect Dom/Master Your submissive Will Truly Respect & Admire), it is highly recommended that you do so before taking on this book.

Informative and Useful Guide To BDSM
By Melissa Robinson
This book gave some really great information offering up 71 useful tips for Dom/Masters. There were tips on how to communicate with your sub properly. How to properly express yourself to your sub. While this book appears to be geared towards newbs. I think any seasoned Dom/Master could find very useful information here. I have been both submissive and Mistress. And I found the tips presented here helpful from both angles actually. And because it says, Dom/Masters, the information here is just as useful to the female counterpart (Mistress).

I have read Volume 1 in this series as well. And I think this author has a good handle on what he is talking about. And I look forward to reading more this author.

Excellent tips
By Liz Evans
The first thing that any Dom should know is that the sub has the control. Don’t believe me? Take a look at this book. In a consensual relationship, the sub is the one to stop things or ask (beg) for more. The author makes it clear from the start that this is important. There are many facets to a Dom/sub relationship, this book touches on some of them. One thing to keep in mind, this is the second book however, for the Dom that is a little past the basics this can be handy. Another thing that the author makes clear is that boundaries need to be established from the start. Included are tips on running a scene, taking the Alpha role at all times, how to guide your sub, and avoiding common BDSM clichs that could ruin the moment. These steps are clear and concise and an honest must have for any Dom wishing to have a fulfilling BDSM relationship and any sub who wants to know more about what to expect from their Dom, and what to be wary of. If you’re looking to be a better Dom you need this book.

The Book of Stones, Revised Edition: Who They Are and What They Teach, by Robert Simmons, Naisha Ahsian

Often dubbed the "crystals bible," this comprehensive reference guide to the spiritual and healing qualities of 455 sacred stones has become the go-to book for looking up the properties of gems and minerals. Each entry includes vivid color photographs for each stone to aid identification and to showcase its beauty, as well as listing its scientific information, its element and chakra correspondences, and the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of each stone.

Illustrated by gorgeously lit, clear color photos to aid quick identification, the book offers an illuminating alphabetical journey through the mineral kingdom, stone by stone. This new edition ofThe Book of Stones, the best-selling guide to some of Earth's most beautiful natural objects, is revised to include 76 new entries.

The book begins with two introductory chapters detailing advice by authors Naisha Ahsian and Robert Simmons on how to work with crystals and stones--including the concept of crystal resonance and the scientific observation that living organisms (such as ourselves) are liquid crystalline structures. Each entry begins with the stone name and photo, plus its elemental and chakra correspondences, as well as keywords that indicate its properties. Next comes a description of the crystal structure, hardness, history, and known locations of each mineral, plus any relevant legend or lore from the past. Each author then offers their own take and personal insights on the subtle energy properties and spiritual applications of the stone. The entries conclude with summaries of the spiritual, emotional, and physical healing qualities of the stone, and an affirmation for evoking its potential benefits. The book's presentation is straightforward enough to make it an excellent introduction for beginners, yet the level of detail and the depth of research make it an invaluable resource for the most experienced stone practitioners.

Not what it seems
By A Reader
Before you buy this book, do yourself a favor and have a look at the product catalog of the authors' crystal business, called Heaven & Earth. I was impressed with this book at first, but then I began to notice how many of the crystals are trademarked. Trademarked crystals seemed a little odd to me, and I can give them the benefit of the doubt if there are one or two, but apparently the authors are "discovering" these new crystals all the time. Keep reading the catalog and you'll find that a lot of these "new" (and as it happens, invariably rare and sold by the gram) crystals are regular, not so uncommon crystals with fancy trademarked names, some other variation of a manmade coating on an existing crystal, or even just glass. Have a good look at the catalog, because the purpose of this book is to convince you that you need the stuff in that catalog.

Don't get me wrong; I believe in crystal healing and that's probably why this systematic exploitation of crystals and the people eager to learn about them makes me feel ill.

I gave this book 2 stars because the photography is lovely and it makes a good doorstop. Please look for another book to buy, though.

trademarking of stones
By Anne
I got this book because it was recommended to me by several friends and it is indeed a beautiful and informative book. However, I am totally disheartened and aggravated by the fact that Robert Simmons is trademarking stones. Is nothing sacred? For some reason, Monsanto comes to mind, and leaves me distrustful of his recommendations.

Great Marketing, but little else
By Melissa Mogan
I will never forget the first time I saw this book. It was in the old Galactic Gateway's store and the gentleman behind the counter saw me mesmerized by it. I saw it as if it were a photoshopped picture with the blurry edges around it, slowly coming into focus and registering that there were PICTURES of stones on the front of this book.
My experience up until this point had been books that were either text books on the composition of minerals, or Melody's work, while still a staple in my healing room, doesn't offer the colorful adventure that TBOS does.
The book was on the highest shelf of course, and my arms were full of stones I was about to purchase. I had to turn my back and lay down all my treasures and I was sure that when I whipped back around ready to grab that book off the top shelf it would be gone. But it was still there, and I managed to get it into my hands and settle down in the corner in the floor to take my time savoring one of the most beautiful books I had ever seen. I brought the book home needless to say and like Melody's work changed the way I looked at the world, TBOS also had some influence on the direction that I have taken in my life.

I carried this book around with me until it became dog eared, the cover was tearing, there are coffee stains on it, some of the pages have curled from moisture, my grandson laid his fudgcicle on it one day. This gives you some idea of how valuable this book has been to me. I would rush home to read about the stones I had purchased. I already knew the chemical makeup, I already knew the historical values, I already knew the gemlogical values, I wanted to know what people were using these stones for!
This was the first book that I noticed focused on healing ourselves, then others. This book takes you through a journey of crystal healing like no other book can or has. It is almost as if Naisha Ashian kept a journel while meditating with each of these stones, and Robert Simmons kept his version. That is the beauty of this book, there are two versions to every stone. Everyone I know prefers one over the other, when I first started I liked Robert Simmons version better, as I worked on deeper layers and through more of my own personal experiences with these stones, I came to truly appreciate the facinating work that Naisha Ashian was doing with these stones.
So many years ago, this book showed me that there was an entire industry that revolves around crystals and thier uses. With this book in tow, I have learned alot about this industry and have made decisions and formed many opinions based on the politics that surrounds this and later books on this subject. This book, with Melody's book ( to be reviewed next week), changed the course of my life, the direction of my path and the way I look at myself and others. I know I am not alone when I say that this work we call TBOS, is to date one of the most well known books on stones, even if it isn't the most accurate.

Size and weight TBOS (2.5★)

TBOS scores a little low in this category. TBOS is not only larger than the average book, it seems heavier to me than it should be. I know this is just a personal opinion, but in an age where our phones are sold by the oz., this book seems to be a bit cumbersom in some circusmstnaces. It will fit in a backpack, this is why I think it is heavier than it should be, I carried it around for a long time and finally shelfed it for TCB1 / 2 because of the portability issue. As far as using this book in the home, definitely a fun journey, A hot cup of tulsi tea, a warm blanket and Merlin on my feet while reading this book is a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Organization TBOS (3.5★)

I Love the way that this book is organized. It must be my gemini moon, but I really like having access to two different reviews on the same page. This book also organizes stone by the name. If you have looked at other books, you may see where they are categorized by mineral, this can make finding agate difficult if you aren't aware that it is a form of quartz. TBOS separates this out beautifully helping you to find your stone descriptions quickly and easily. The table of contents groups stones into categories and subdivides them into specifics. This makes it easy to find the different agates that are listed as well as hundreds of other stones that are subcategorized in the mineral kingddom. There is no index in TBOS, so there is no way to look up stones through keywords or illnesses, this is why I took points off, I do like being able to look up an illness and seeing what stones others have used, this makes TBOS a challenge to use in your healing room.

Ease of use TBOS (3.5★)

In my opinion, TBOS works kind of like a one way street, meaning if I know what stone I want to read about - and possibly know the trademarked name- it's great.. When I am looking for a stone to work with a particular issue, it is just too much research to go through the entire book glancing through the pages at key words when there are other books on the market that offer an index. However, I will say that I have been known to look up a keyword in another index, get the suggestions, then look them up in TBOS. This is one area where organization becomes critical, with no index in TBOS, it creates challenges with use as practical handbook in the healing room and that is the one reason this book recieved the scores it has.
This book also offers very little relevent information for a crystal healer in the healing room, the experiences expressed here are personal expeiriences by two very gifted and talented individuals, however most clients that crystal healers work on are not as familiar with stone energies as these two, so it is much more subtle for clients.

Presentation TBOS (3★)

So I admitted that initially I believed TBOS to be the most beautiful book I had ever seen, and I still stand by the fact that it is one of the most beautifully illustrated stone books on the market. Presentation covers more than the illustrations, although they are a large part of it. Presentation also covers how the whole project comes together, the cohesiveness of the transition between subjects, the elements of design that are not limited to how the book looks but how the book feels. The pictures are amazing, however they are the stones that one would see in a museum, usually not sitting on a shelf at your local rock shop. This is the biggest 'ding' for this category, we all want to see amazing stones, but as a vendor, dealer and consumer it is no fun trying to please someone carrying around TBOS looking for an azurite that looks just like the picture.
The next part of presentation is the feel, over time the realization starts to kick in that there is a slight marketing technique to this book. The mix of beautiful pictures, stones available only by one principal vendor, the exorbitant prices charged for these beauties that are written about within the pages of this book. The lack of resources on how to obtain your own stones becomes pretty obvious. All of these things effect how TBOS presentation score.

Actual Content TBOS (2★)

This is where I walk on thin ice. I admit I have used TBOS for years. I admit to being so excited when I found this book. I am no longer excited about the politics and marketing of this book and that is why the actual content score is so low. Many would disagree with me on this score and ask how I could possibly score this book so low when it has had such an impact on my life - in a good way!
The answer is simple, after a few years learning the industry, selling stones and moving around taking classes as well as giving them, I started to form an opinion of this book and the others that follow, with few exceptions as marketing tools to sell Robert Simmons trademarked stones. There, I said it, sort of out loud.
I won't go into details on my opinion of trademarked stones (I already have in another blog), and Robert Simmons was not alone in the race to TM as much as he could while it was effective. The TM's keep the consumer having to buy from the vendor who owns the TM, otherwise the exact same material purchased from another vendor cannot be called the same name, hence is not talked about in TBOS. Trademarked stone represent a large reason why TBOS scores low on content, but not the only reason. I have not picked my TBOS up in over 2 years. I no longer use it as a refernece, not just because it can be hard to find a stone by symptom, but because of what I call 'fluff'.
Although both authors are very brilliant writers, I prefer to have a reference book tell me facts. This book tells some beautiful stories, some poetic journey's with stones, however there is little fact in this book. The trademarked stones confuse the facts when a crystal healer is honestly trying to find a stone. The work described in these books is not work that has been tried, true or tested by anyone other than the authors. Other books offer compilations of hundreds of experiences, yet this book offers us only two.
Admittedly, to read the experiences of these two was life changing for me at a time when I needed it, however when I look back and see how many times I was on the hunt for merlinite only to find out that the prime material is called psilimelane, and it is much cheaper than merlinite, and not so hard to find, I felt very ignorant. I feel that a book should not leave me feeling ignorant, I feel a book should be up front and honest about the material in it, especially when it is marketing itself as THE reference book on stones. Many of the stones that are named in this book are identified through the trademarked name, leaving out what it really is, causing much confusion within the industry.
This has also led to many 'new discoveries' of stones that are in this book as well as those that have followed. These 'new' stones are not new to earth, new to science, nor are they new to the industry. These new stones are simply old stones with shiny new trademarked names, great stories, and hgh prices -somebody has to pay for all that work right?
Over time I have come to see TBOS as a fiction, a wonderful journey through some of the most beautiful pictures of stones, poetic descriptions that ignite the imagination. However as consumer, I am sadly dissapointed in the actual facts about the stones, thier uses and thier names.
I do not refer to TBOS as a reference book on stones, I refer to it more as a beautiful journey through some very gifted writers experience using stones in a way others have not written about very well.
Would I recommend this book to others- YES - with a disclaimer of what it is
Would I re-purchase this book if the need arose - NO
TBOS total score 2.9 ★

By Ronda Barmoy
Utilized for a Kingergarten science fair display on Teeth/health. Easy for a young person to get the key points/learn about teeth/mouth, etc and interesting to adults. Laminated, wipes clean, good size for viewing and portability. Could be utilized over and over. Would be great for older students, dental hygiene students, public health programs or dental offices.

Great for any Dental student or professional!
By Lynn Marie
This is a great quick study sheet! I like how the lamination is thick- it's easy for me to locate when I need it. I like to have it on my clinical clipboard, but usually I have it with my Oral Anatomy books. I am currently a Dental Hygiene student and although I've worked as an assistant for several years, this is so helpful and a great supplement especially if you are a visual learner!

Chock full of drama goodies
By Eric von Rothkirch
What Lajos Egri will show you:

* Formulate your premise. Premise is a statement, idea, or conviction that your story proves true. For example, the premise of Romeo and Juliet would be something like "Love defies even death."

* Choose a pivotal character who will force the conflict.

* Orchestrate the other characters. The unity of opposites must be binding. Polar opposites must form a dialectic which creates a unified tension.

* Be careful to select the correct point of attack. Every point of attack starts with conflict.

* There are several types of conflict, such as jumping conflict, but you only want rising or foreshadowing conflict.

* No conflict can rise without perpetual exposition, which is transition. For example, a character going about his daily life doesn't suddenly become a NAZI, it happens in gradual steps--transition.

* Rising conflict, the product of exposition and transition, will ensure growth.

* Characters must conflict--there must be some polarity.

* Crisis will lead to climax. Climax will lead to conclusion.

* Dialogue should come from the voice of the character, not the writer.

Many TV, film, and novel plots and characters lack compelling conflict. The characters are just floating by... until something big happens. Lajos Egri illustrates how to change all this.

Our Aristotle
By Mark Wieczorek
Egri's work is the only contender that I know of to Aristotle's "Poetics" for a guide to what makes good writing Good. Throw in Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with A Thousand Faces" and you have a sort of holy trilogy and trinity for writers. I've looked at some writing computer programs (haven't bought any yet), and many of them use one, or all of these methods. As an aside, I'll also throw in Polti as a source for plot. Not because I think he's very good, but because he's popular.
In Egri's world, character is king. Each of the characters, he states, must have a driving reason to be on stage, and their reasons must be diametrically opposed. In other words, they can't all get what they want - for one person to get what she wants, someone else must be deprived of their goal. Each character must also be desperate (desperate enough to be interesting) to get what he wants. (It's been a few years since I've read Egri, so please forgive my bad paraphrasing.)
Using many examples (some familiar, some unfamiliar) he gives you the tools to analyze plays (and all stories), and (therefore, hopefully) write plays, or stories, or novels, or movies... My girlfriend and I, even years after reading this book can't walk out of a movie theater or playhouse without analyzing it using the methods we learned from Egri.
If I were only able to reccomend one book to writers, this would be it. (Followed, of course, by Aristotle & Campbell). If I were to have all books erased from my memory and could only re-read one, this would be a strong contendor. If I could say only one thing to you, reader of this review, it would be read this book as soon as you can get your grubby hands on it.

I wish I had read this one first
By A Customer
Well, I read this book recently after reading god knows how many screenwriting books. Some of them are quite repetitive aren't they?! The thing that I've found is that there are a lot of books out there that explain the three-act structure by saying you have a set-up, then you have your turning points, your climax, your resolution blah blah blah. Thing is we all instinctively know we need this stuff in our plays and screenplays but what's hard as a writer is actually figuring out what these should be. What makes a good turning point, what makes a good resolution etc? If you want to find out, I strongly suggest you read this book.
I found this book (along with Robert McKee's 'Story') the most useful out of the many (screenwriting) books I've read because he gets into the nitty gritty hard stuff. He makes you think about how important the premise is. I disagree with some of the reviews of this book on this site that say that Egri says you have to know your premise from the outset, he doesn't say that, what he does say is that you have to know it clearly at some stage in writing your script and this is true because we go to films to find something out and all the pieces have to fit together or you'll say something like 'The second half of the movie dragged', 'Why did she do that? That wasn't in character' or 'The movie tried to prove too many points all at once' and so on.
The more I write scripts, the more I realise that it's all about planning and architecture because pacing is everything unlike novels etc.
In particular, the most useful takeout from this book is that your premise has to match your character and story. He goes into detail using 'A Doll's House' as an example. If Nora had been a different character, the resolution wouldn't have worked as well as it did and if the story happenings weren't chosen carefully based on her character, then the story wouldn't have rung true nor would we have understood what the premise is.
The other thing that I think you'll really like is the stuff on conflict, the different types of conflict and when to use a particular kind of conflict for the story you wish to tell.
I'm writing a script right now and this book encouraged me to be a bit more lateral and let go of the ideas I already had because they may not be the right situation for my main character or the story as is might not be the best vehicle for arguing the premise I want to argue.
Brilliant stuff! Written so long ago yet still so relevant.

Review

"This is a satisfying, highly useful text that not only covers the standard content of a comparative religions course but also delves into interesting questions of interreligious and interideological dialogue."

I. Author Letter

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past year, I’ve started to call Think World Religions the "anti-textbook." The term came to me, frankly, after a very tough reader review on Amazon.com. In it, a professor said that TWR was not a true textbook because it lured students with bright graphics, bold photographs, and a magazine format.

After losing a couple of nights sleep, I decided to respond. I sent the professor a heads-up that I would be replying, asked for feedback on ways to improve the book, and posted a response online. As I wrote about TWR, I realized that the reviewer was right. My goal all along has been to create a new kind of textbook: lively, accessible, affordable, and true to a spirit of dialog. Thus—the "anti-textbook."

As a scholar of lived religion focusing on Orthodox Christianity, I seek ways to help students understand how religion interacts with every aspect of human life. Theology and ideology are important. So are relations of power, domination, and revolution. But to me, those cannot take the place of colors, smells, movements, bodies, music, and art that infuse sacred experiences for people around the world.

With those ideas in mind, I have written TWR with some traits unusual for world religion textbooks. My prose is unabashedly personal, I tell stories about my experiences and my work. By keeping the prose anecdotal, active, and narrative, I hope students will consider TWR to be one voice in a conversation that includes me, them, and people around the world.

In the introduction, I describe TWR as a guidebook. No textbook is truly encyclopedic, and I hope that students will see this text pointing them toward their own learning rather than pretending omniscience. In asking students to consider football (especially my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers) as a form of religion, TWR acknowledges how difficult it can be to define and discuss religion.

By asking the same four questions to each sacred tradition, TWR offers students a path toward comparison and analysis. Photographs and diagrams consistently enhance critical thinking and discussion. How, for example, might a Greek Orthodox cross, a medieval Spanish crucifix, and a Chagall painting of the Crucifixion offer different visions of Christianity?

By including both sacred places and contemporary problems, TWR helps students to see the sacred all around them, part of both their own landscape and that of foreign lands.

As I wrote the first draft of each chapter, I asked my Honors Introduction to World Religions class to read and comment on the text. That dialog helped me to create Think World Religions, and I hope that you and your students will continue that conversation.

Please do contact me if you have any questions, comments, or improvements for Think World Religions. My email address is r.robson@usciences.edu.

Sincerely

Roy R. Robson

Kindle Edition needs some work
By D. Mossor
Amazon is proud of the Kindle edition of this book, and I have no idea why. They state:

Print Replica Kindle books maintain the rich formatting and layout of their related print editions and offer many of the advantages of standard Kindle books. Features include:

Notes and highlights
Search, copy and paste
Zoom and pan
Pop-out linked table-of-contents

This is a problem - on 7" tablets or a first-gen iPad, it is impossible to read without zooming and panning. I would like to read it on my laptop, as it says in the description that it is available for all platforms, but when I try it tells me it can only be read via a Kindle app on a mobile device.

Now that I see they've released a Kindle Fire app for PCs, I'll try that tonight and see if it's any better.

Although it did have a good bit of information in it
By Yoggles
This "book" reminded me more of a magazine rather than a higher educational reference book. Although it did have a good bit of information in it, I don't like feeling as if my intelligence is being insulted and or the material being "dumbed-down" in order to appeal to the younger generation of college goers.

Breadth and Depth
By A Customer
Subtracting a star for the lack of insight on indigenous religions. It is harder to go in depth but can give better understanding into the development of religion. Perhaps this is for a different textbook. The other chapters have such depth, however, and it is sad for it to end, so to speak.
