Excellent, Practical insight into naming

I just finished reading Taylor's book.
Pros:
1. Concise, non-consultantese writing style. He gets to the point--no fluff like most business authors (most of whom seem to feel more words is better). He is also rather witty--I enjoy a writer who can add a little humor.
2. Clear steps on the porcess of naming such that you can--gasp!--try it yourself
3. Excellent information on the types of naming categories--with detailed exmaples.
4. Great info on potential pitfalls--including the very real issue of managing people throughout the naming porcess, as well as other challenges

One minor con:
1. Some visual displays would have been a nice touch. He writes well about the importance of tag lines (apparently called "strap lines" in the UK) and images--some displays to show that would have been nice.

Overall, an excellent book. I read it over a weekend, and got everything I need from it.

Worthwhile and A Good Read

As a non-marketing type who had never named anything but humans, I found this book helpful, easy to understand, and fun to read. It's a process that is an art vs. a science but the author gives you plenty of example to fuel your own creative process. Whether you're a one-woman naming machine or working with a team, valuable information!

About the Author
Steve Kaufman was born April 20, 1957 in New York City. He was introduced to music by his father, a jazz pianist, and his mother, a classically trained pianist. At the age of four, Steve started to play the piano and later moved on to the cello. At 10 he began playing the guitar, but after a few years of strumming, he put the guitar under the bed. At 14, Steve started "picking" the guitar and he has not put it down since.

Steve is the only three time winner of the prestigious National Flatpicking Championships held in Winfield, Kansas. His music covers a broad range of styles. He is an extremely versatile performer and his performances are highlighted by his blazing technic and humor. Here is what some of the great flatpickers and bluegrass musicians have to say about him:

This book is very accessible.
For each tune presented, it gives first the guitar chords and melody (including a TAB rendition of the melody), then the complete lyrics, then the guitar TAB. This allows you to play the song at any level of complexity you like, up to Norman's own, without requiring of you the ability to read standard musical notation.
The spiral binding allows the book to lie flat when open, making it physically very easy to use.
Throughout there are photos of Norman, Nancy and friends, making the book an aesthetic delight.

a handy resource for the Norman Blake fan

I tend to grab books and DVDs by or about artists like Norman as a matter of principle, assuming that there may not be a lot of commercial appeal and they'll eventually go out of print. A little grim, but based on experience. So, as a Norman Blake fan, I didn't want to pass this book up. It's a good book, full of Norman's original songs, music and lyrics. As a guitarist, I wish it included his solos and instrumental pieces, but it doesn't. I'm happy to have it in my library of music, but I'm still waiting for someone to publish a book of his solos and a breakdown of his playing style!

Look at this way... If You want to play like Norman Blake you better be an advanced player. This book could be used by anyone that wants to pusue his sound. The correct chords and words are here. Strum chords, crosspick or just have fun, this book is correct. The tabs are right... Steve Kaufman is a killer player and he did a great job depicting his, mine and all flatpickers idol!!! Don't be lead off by any bad reviews.

About the Author

Brad Sheafor is Professor of Social Work at Colorado State University where has taught a wide variety of courses in both the BSW and MSW programs. He has also served in administrative positions including Director of the social work program, Associate Dean for Research and Interim Dean of the umbrella college that includes social work, Associate Director of the Human Factors Research Laboratory, and Co-Director of the Family and Youth Institute.

                Dr. Sheafor has served as a juvenile probation officer, director of a community planning council, and as president of his local United Way. He has been a member of the Exam Committee for the Association of Social Work Boards (licensing), part of the workgroup creating NASW’s Center for Workforce Studies, and a founding member of the Baccalaureate Program Directors Association. With the Council on Social Work Education he has been President, Senior Scholar, and recipient of CSWE’s Lifetime Achievement in Social Work Education Award. He has also been a Fulbright Lecturer to New Zealand and a Visiting Fellow in Australia.

                Dr. Sheafor is co-author of 23 books listed with the Library of Congress. In addition to Techniques for Social Work Practice (8 editions with Charles Horejsi), he has co-authored 12 editions of Social Work: A Profession of Many Faces (with Armando Morales and Malcolm Scott), a history of the development of baccalaureate social work in the United States (with Barbara Shank), a book on field instruction (edited with Lowell Jenkins), and book reporting a comprehensive task analysis of social work practice (with Robert Teare).

 

 

Charles Horejsi is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Montana having served that university for a number of years as a faculty member teaching primarily child welfare and social work practice courses, as well as being involved with the School of Social Work’s field instruction program.

                A licensed clinical social worker, Dr. Horejsi had practice experience in marriage and family counseling, child welfare, and juvenile probation. He conducted agency staff training in more than a dozen states and received the Montana NASW’s “Social Worker of the Year” award recognizing his many contributions to strengthening the quality of social work in that state.

                Dr. Horejsi’s research has focused on risk assessment in child protection, issues of worker safety on the job, and on methods of assessment and case planning in child welfare agencies. In addition to numerous monographs and more than 30 professional articles, Dr. Horejsi has authored or co-authored 13 books listed with the Library of Congress. These publications include: Family Foster Care: A Handbook for Social Workers, Social Work Practice with Parents of Children in Foster Care: A Handbook (with Anne Vandeberg Bertsche and Frank Clark), three editions of  The Social Work Practicum: A Guide and Workbook for Students (with Cynthia Garthwait), and eight editions of Techniques and Guidelines for Social Work Practice (with Bradford Sheafor).

Profiteering at its Finest!

FAR to overpriced for the content and the use it will get. I had to purchase this "workbook" for my Generalist Practice with Individuals & Families. Yet to even use it! It isn't even a research based compilation. It is just an expensive list of do's and do nots. The pages are thick as marble and it is a pain to carry around (bigger than your laptop). If you are forced to buy this... just get the Kindle version.

Professors need to find an alternative book for this one. This book has too much in it. 1 chapter consist of 30+ pages. Nobody's attention span is that long to read all this pages at ones.

The book came in good quality but the actual material was boring.

Whoever owns the rights to this book is doing themselves a disservice. Mr. Raiport's overview of the Russian Olympic team's psychological training tools is indispensable to athletes and athletics.

I WANT MORE!!!

This is one of my favorite books! If my house were burning down I'd grab Supertraining and this book. The read is easy and flowing if youre into the subject, I read it all in one night because I could not put it down. NO COMPLAINTS! I wish I could find more from Dr. Raiport and or his colleages, please if anyone knows where to find any please do not hesitate to hit up my email at ayres88sec@gmail.com

Solid information

Solid info about the mind game as developed by the Soviets. Lots of good exercises. As usual, it's important to take a fresh look at old concepts, and this book does that. Self development has been around since before the Greek philosophers, but understanding and applying it is made easier by seeing the basic ideas from every angle and using various exercises; this book offers both.
