Get ready to study and learn

This is a highly technical book that goes into specifics about the functional operations of a business. This book is not really for beginners unless you are a self- learner. Technical business operational jargon is used and concepts go deep and are depicted using industry style graphs . But if you know a thing or two about business' operations, then you will only become that more the wiser.

The Sad Truth About Electric Razors John Krause,jlk3536@verizon.net

Tyler,I have been using electric razors for over 50 years and people think that they are better,no they are worse! I started in the military with an Elton which was the precursor to all of the Brauns.The construction was better being almost all metal.Battery life was not as good and this is the only advancement that has been made. The best electric razor ever was sold by the REAL Abercrombie and Fitch in New York.They billed it as the 60 second shaver and you could actually do a pre sale shave in the store(before aids became a problem).That shaver was made by an Austrian co. called Peyer. Peyer left Austria and went to Japan for a few years and eventually to China. Current versions are a poor substitute and mostly plastic.They do have a battery operated unit which is cheap and fairly efficient.(Good travel Razor where electricity may be unavailable) Braun is the best of the lot I agree but it is no better than a 20 YO Braun that I purchased in Boston.That one does not have good battery life so that always take the power cord with me. Norelco does not hack it and all of the top models,Braun,Panasonic, and Norelco are totally over priced!

Years ago the lower end models often shaved almost as well as their big brothers. That is no longer true.As far as how to prepare your face,I find no different in pre electric lotions whether $3 or $20.If your beard is really dry,I prefer nothing. In the summer,powders such as Eltron,s stick will achieve the dryness that I need.Hot showers add little but take up time. I have tried shaving oils.They do work to some extent but then you spend extra time getting rid go the oily residue. the after shave cleaning by machine is just ann added expense and is not necessary because rinsing the head and the foil in warm water will do the trick!

This is a great/important starting point for those that are about to buy an electric razor. Tyler's book and videos are very good and covers many cconcerns. Don't be shocked --- but the most expensive shavers are also the top-rated ones.
The only reason that I can't give it a full 5 stars is due to the minimal coverage/reviews of those folks that are on a tight budget.

Tyler's guide won me over. It allowed me to try another electric shaver, after learning to choose the right type for me.

This guide by Tyler is wholeheartedly recommended by me for anyone with sensitive irritable skin and/or ingrown hairs. I have tried an electric shaver twice and it wasn't good for me. The last one I tried was a pricey model however given my sensitive skin and probably my beard my skin was irritated. So years later after suffering ingrown hairs strictly on my lower & middle neck area, at the recommendation of my GP I looked into an electric shaver as an option once again. I did look into electric shavers and did find suggestions as to the best ones in relation to ingrown hairs specifically but wasn't convinced. Reading Tyler's guide gave me more confidence in making this confusing decision to invest in the purchase of an electric shaver once again. I realised I clearly chose the type of shaver causing irritation for sensitive skin, this greatly encouraged me that my next decision would be a much better informed one after this finalised my research. This guide provided me with a much better understanding of what type of beard I have by comparison with many photos and explanation as to which models are suitable. I only wish there was more guidance for the maintenance of the shaver for long term use. Living overseas it would be better to know how essential the cleaning unit is and is there lubrication in the proprietary cleaning fluid? Is running the head under hot water, or spraying the head with spray good? I watched a video about making the cleaning fluid yourself by buying some kind of sachets which from where I live is not practical. I would like to do it myself just as well if not better for the sake of both maintenance of the unit into the longer term as well as hygiene. Furthermore there are more products out there for prep ping for your shave to ensure reduction of irritation and treatment of ingrown hairs at least as your skin recovers. Because of those 2 areas I give it 4 stars, I am nevertheless happy with the guide. Thank you Tyler

A wonderful contribution by Elizabeth Spring

A couple of years back, I happened onto a blog created by astrologer and Jungian therapist, Elizabeth Spring. I was so taken by her wise, insightful, and heartfelt writing that I sent her a fan letter and have followed the evolution of her work since. She has recently published an excellent book, North Node Astrology: Rediscovering your Life Direction and Soul Purpose. It's clear, readable, and personable for students at any level of astrology. A changed perpective.

There are a lot of things about this book that I like. She maintains a good pace and answers back to astrological debunkers, but the main thing that is appealing is her extremely clear presentation of the material. She is able to present astrology in a way that clearly reflects the subjects deep philosophical roots. Her inclusion of Jung is exactly what karmic astrology needs because it reflects the amount of thought that does go into esoteric astrology.

The title of this book is a little misleading. The actual descriptions of the nodes does not begin until page 165. Chapters 4-9 are actually entirely on the outer planets. The chapters, in my opinion, are worth reading, but they don't actually talk entirely about the nodes. You basically have to figure out what happens if one of the outer planets conjuncts or aspects a node because this book doesn't explain that in any detail. I agree with one of the other comments; the book is slightly off topic at times.

My orignal review was that the book was fair. I have since changed my opinion after reflecting on my north node for several months. I was uncomfortable with this type of astrology because it seemed damaging to tell people to avoid certain behaviors. After much consideration, I have found that I actually have much more affinity with my North Node than I do with my South Node. I would honestly say that of all astrology books, this book in the long run changed my life the most. I stopped doing my South Node and it wasn't painful once I recognized that I didn't want the behaviors in the first place. This is a great author. She has a lot to contribute.

The cover was the best part.

The book wasn't as informational as I had hoped. And it would have benefited from a much tighter focus on the title subject. My expectation was to have a resource for supporting my application of the North nodes in guiding both my self and my friends on their soul journeys. Instead I found out a whole lot about Elizabeth's journey and very little else. Her blog is well written and focused, so I expected that her book would be of the same caliber. Instead it came across as a compilation of disparate essays that had been composed from personal journals and memoirs.

Perhaps I assumed too much based on her strong connection in her online material between the mythology and symbology of Jungian archetypes and the astrological worlds? She makes passing notes on these much stronger stories and then segues back into her personal views.

This book might be helpful to people who are just approaching the topic and her personal revelations may help others to understand their own. I appreciated the brief tour of the outer planets and thought that her conceptualizations were strong, but I was surprised as the title and cover didn't mention these other influences.

Maybe the title was misleading and should have stated something closer to "A brief introduction to astrology and patterns of human development", although that also promises something that might be broader and well researched.

By note, I've found the works of Jan Spiller on the North Nodes to be much more information packed and useful as reference books.

A goldmine of textures and impressions

This is a wonderful anthology of autobiographical writings, spanning the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Beginning with Hector St. John de Crevecoeur's famous defining statement of cultural identity, 'What is an American' the collection captures the 'outsider' American becoming whatever an 'American' is...it's a superbly apt paradox and a fascinating problematic and one that is full of dramatic axis: the immigrant looking back to his or her old country while negotiating the new. One can't help feeling a certain exhileration at the complexity of the 'American experience' and the focus on first impressions of America is the compelling aspect--the just off the boat wonderment, the gradual disillusionment, and the afterthought or reflection from many years on--- a multitude of newcomers trying to figure out first hand how the society works, what its values are, how each new arrival hopes to carve his or her own world, the constant need for adaptation and improvisation, the sense in which loss and gain function as a necessary interchange, the bleaker moments of crisis and frustration, and, ultimately, survival, though of the tempered, reflective rather than triumphant or grandiose kind. The accounts feel so personal and immediate, full of sights and sounds and textures. It's a bit like reading historical fiction, because the sense of character and individual struggle is so strong. This first person quality is what really brings the history to life for me. Each letter or autobiographical extract seems to deliver such minute and particular documentary detail and one learns a tremendous amount of domestic and social history in the process. My favorites are probably a Norwegian frontier mother's account of her hard Iowan farming life, full of the stoically endured pains of leaving familiar life behind and her level headed grappling with the differences that bombard her as she and her husband try to build their farm; an extract from the memoirs of Henry Villard, describing his vigorous, heady engagement with American politics in the 1850s; Andrew Carnegie's robust and unromanticized account of his early immigrant days in Pittsburg; a young Syrian intellectual's memories of agonizing loneliness, struggle with the English language and determination to suceed in academic life at the turn of the century...and so it goes on, though I confess that my weakness is for the earlier accounts, with all their strange modernity (Crevecouer seems so timelessly on the nail about American types and the mingling of different religions and European ethnicities throughout the land). I wish there were more volumes. The introduction, by the way, is first-rate. Hutner is clearly a scholar of great integrity. But there is no reason this book should be limited to a student readership--it is so full of life and would be a great resource for all kinds of writers, and anyone with an interest in their own immigrant roots. It also has a wonderful feeling of landscape and customs, revealing an America of regions, urban and metropolitan. A great strength of the selection is that it offers a full array of experiences from many different countries--India, China, Korea, Syria, and Mexico--as well as European. New York figures prominently but does not dominate. All the usual cliches of the immigration account (Ellis Island, the immigrant as uneducated and backward) are avoided because each voice is so distinguished, so full of opinion and views and fully formed ideological outlook. All the voices are those of thinkers, and that's what makes this gem of an anthology such a great read.
