Rotten Bodies: A Zombie Short Story Collection, by Steven Jenkins

We all fear death's dark spectre, but in a zombie apocalypse, dying is a privilege reserved for the lucky few. There are worse things than a bullet to the brain--much worse.

The dead are walking, and they're hungry. Steven Jenkins, bestselling author of Fourteen Days and Burn The Dead, shares six zombie tales that are rotten for all the right reasons.

Meet Dave, a husband and father with a dirty secret, who quickly discovers that lies aren't only dangerous...they're deadly. Athlete Sarah once ran for glory, but when she finds herself alone on a country road with an injured knee, second place is as good as last. Working in a cremation facility, Rob likes to peek secretly at the faces of his inventory before they're turned to ash. When it comes to workplace health and sanity, however, some rules are better left unbroken. Howard, shovelling coal in the darkness of a Welsh coal mine, knows something's amiss when his colleagues begin to disappear. But it's when the lights come on that things get truly scary.

Six different takes on the undead, from the grotesque to the downright terrifying. But reader beware: as the groans get louder and the twitching starts, you'll be dying to reach the final page.

"Utterly hair-raising, in all its gory glory!"

About the Author
Steven Jenkins was born in the small Welsh town of Llanelli, where he began writing stories at the age of eight, inspired by '80s horror movies and novels by Richard Matheson. During Steven's teenage years, as well as being a black-belt kickboxer, he became a great lover of writing dark and twisted poems--six of which gained him publications with Poetry Now, Brownstone Books, and Strong Words. Over the next few years, as well as becoming a husband and father, Steven spent his free time writing short stories, achieving further publication with Dark Moon Digest. His terrifying tales of the afterlife and zombies gained him positive reviews, particularly his story, Burning Ambition, which also came runner up in a Five-Stop-Story contest. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of zombie short stories!
By S. Jordan
Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, I must admit I am a huge fan of anything zombie-related – books, movies, clothing, Jeep accessories – pretty much anything. I also expect books or stories that I read (yes, even stories about zombies) to have a solid plot, defined direction and impeccable grammar and composition. Nothing is more irritating than feeling my time has been wasted on an unimaginative, lackluster, poorly-executed book. But with this short story collection, I definitely was not disappointed.

This book includes 6 short zombie tales which I will summarize here:

I Am Dead: A very short story with a completely unexpected ending in which a zombie expresses his innermost thoughts and feelings. I laughed out loud at the end of this one. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Room 503: A devoted father yet not-so-devoted husband makes one judgment error too many. Will his secrets and lies finally come back to bite him (pun intended)?

Run: A former long-distance runner with a bum knee is on a deserted country road literally running for her life from an equally agile and determined zombie.

Burning Ambition: An under-appreciated worker at a cremation facility is compelled to look into the faces of the dead before sending them into the fire, which may turn out to be a more dangerous and distressing practice than he anticipated.
The Pit: A terrifying story of a coal miner trapped in complete darkness underground with scores of undead fellow miners, and his desperate attempts to find his way out.

Simon Dunn: Former Zombie: An utterly unique story detailing the trials and tribulations of a “recovered” zombie. I don’t believe I’ve ever come across anything like it before. I also laughed out loud at the end of this story.

The stories in this collection have it all – moments that are horrifying, heart-wrenching, frustrating and downright hilarious. They are all incredibly well-written and descriptive. I highly recommend this book to any zombie aficionados or fans of short stories in general. I also have another of this author’s books – Fourteen Days – which I am looking forward to starting soon.

ROTTEN BODIES: A Zombie Short Story Collection

Author: Steven Jenkins

Type of Book: eBook

Genre: Horror, Zombie Fiction

Length: 101 pages

Release Date: April 27, 2015

Publisher: Different Cloud Publishing

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

* This book is currently available for free on Amazon. However, I do not know how long it will remain being available for free, so I suggest you get this book right away to avoid being disappointed.

I love the creepiness of the cover of this book. Lots of books have zombies on the cover. What sets this cover apart from others is the choice to use the sepia tons. Also if you look closely at the female zombie on the cover you will notice that she does not seem to have the blank, expressionless stare that we often equate with zombies. Even though she is rotting and very scary looking, there is something about her eyes and her expression that make her seem sad or lost. I LOVE this cover.

This collection contains six short stories. They are:

I AM DEAD: "I don't know who or what killed me - all I know is that I can smell my rotting flesh."

ROOM 503: Dave and Clare are the parents of five year old Katie. They live in a normal house in a normal neighborhood. News of an infection is all over the television. Up until now all cases of the infected had been far away, but it seems to be coming closer to their hometown.

Dave isn't worried. "Yeah, but that's all just paranoia, health and safety gone mad. Remember when it was swine flu?... And that blew over."

He has the perfect life, but just as so many men before him have done, Dave is having an affair with a young, pretty blonde. He tells his family he is going to a seminar and instead meets up with Jenni at a hotel.

RUN - Sarah is on a deserted country road, but she's not alone. Something or someone is chasing her and she is running for her life.

BURNING AMBITION - This story has been expanded upon and has been published as a full length bestselling novel called "Burn The Dead." I have read both the short story and the full length novel and enjoyed both immensely.

THE PIT - Twenty-five year old Howard John Thomas in the coal-mine (better known as the pit). His wife, Thelma hates him working there, but Howard grew up poor and without a father. He wants a better life for his two children. "Not even The Dead rising will stop this Welshma

SIMON DUNN: FORMER ZOMBIE - Simon had been at the mall when a fat woman bit him. Somehow he became a zombie and is now human again. 'Former Zombie' is the politically correct term for what he is now.

I love this collection of zombie stories. I wasn't sure what to expect with this collection, but was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed every single story in the collection.

This author has a gift for writing short stories. This is the second collection of stories by Steven Jenkins that I have read and both collections are fully deserving of a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Quickies with the Dead
By Perry Lake
Watch out, it's lumbering your way; another collection of short horrors from Steve Jenkins. His last anthology, "Spine", covered the gamut of horror. This new book focuses on just one kind: zombies.

Now zombies are not my favorite monsters. If they're supposed to be mindless, there's not a great deal you can do with the monster itself. Still, clever writers can use the subject. For instance, the TV show The Walking Dead has zombies but the stories are really about the human survivors.

Jenkins gets his zombie book off to a great start. At only a few pages, it's hard to describe "I Am Dead" without giving away much, but it has a zombie lamenting his fate—and a killer twist. 5/5

"Room 503" is fairly standard with the zombie action, but added to this is the hero's personal crisis. Unfortunately, it's hard to identify with this loser. 3/5

"Run" is about a jogger running the marathon of her life—with a relentless zombie on her tail. She tires, he doesn't. It's a short, simple story with hardly a wasted word. 4/5

"Burning Ambition" is the original short story from which Jenkins later developed his novel "Burn the Dead". It's a story about how society has come to deal with the zombie outbreak—they're just more rubbish to be hauled off—and burned. The ending is surprising, stunning, depressing, and simply to be expected. 5/5

In "The Pit", the zombie apocalypse is relegated only to various underground regions. That's fine—unless you're lost in the darkness of a coal mine. And that's exactly what happens to a Welsh miner who find himself alone with the dead. There's nothing really new here but it's still a well-told story. 4/5

Lastly, "Simon Dunn: Former Zombie" shows us there is a cure for being one of the walking dead—but the repercussions remain. The story is clever but very short. 4/5

Uncertainty in Games (Playful Thinking), by Greg Costikyan

In life, uncertainty surrounds us. Things that we thought were good for us turn out to be bad for us (and vice versa); people we thought we knew well behave in mysterious ways; the stock market takes a nosedive. Thanks to an inexplicable optimism, most of the time we are fairly cheerful about it all. But we do devote much effort to managing and ameliorating uncertainty. Is it any wonder, then, asks Greg Costikyan, that we have taken this aspect of our lives and transformed it culturally, making a series of elaborate constructs that subject us to uncertainty but in a fictive and nonthreatening way? That is: we create games. In this concise and entertaining book, Costikyan, an award-winning game designer, argues that games require uncertainty to hold our interest, and that the struggle to master uncertainty is central to their appeal. Game designers, he suggests, can harness the idea of uncertainty to guide their work. Costikyan explores the many sources of uncertainty in many sorts of games -- from Super Mario Bros. to Rock/Paper/Scissors, from Monopoly to CityVille, from FPS Deathmatch play to Chess. He describes types of uncertainty, including performative uncertainty, analytic complexity, and narrative anticipation. And he suggest ways that game designers who want to craft novel game experiences can use an understanding of game uncertainty in its many forms to improve their designs.

Review

Once again, Greg Costikyan has given us an original and insightful angle on game design. In a world inundated with overwrought megabytes about fun, graphics, and immersion, Costikyan shows that an analysis of the role of uncertainty in games sheds important light on the process of game design. This book should be required reading for game designers.

(Chris Crawford, former head of Atari's Games Research Group, and founder of the Game Developers Conference)

Until now, uncertainty has been a shadowy concept in the world of game design; hard to put a finger on, hard to pin down. In this incisive text, rich with examples, Greg Costikyan captures uncertainty, dissects it, analyzes it, then miraculously brings it back to life and sets it free, all in the name of showing us what uncertainty truly is: the secret force that makes us love games.

(Jesse Schell, Carnegie Mellon University; CEO, Schell Games)

Greg Costikyan is a true veteran of the game industry. His career spans the earliest online videogames, tabletop role-playing games and wargames, and recent Facebook and casual hits. Uncertainty in Games puts Costikyan's considerable experience and pointed intellect to good use. The result is some of the most insightful, accessible, and witty writing about games in recent memory. There is one thing I have no uncertainty about: my game design students will be reading Uncertainty in Games.

(Eric Zimmerman, independent game designer & founding faculty, NYU Game Center)

Uncertainty in Games is sure to provide readers of all stripes many satisfying 'Aha!' moments. For gamers, those might take the form of ' That's why I got hooked on Game X.' For developers, there's a wealth of specific advice for providing deeper, more surprising experiences. Academics will discover new tools of critical analysis rooted in the unique perspective of a hands-on game designer. Even publishers will find insights into how better to retain players and monetize them more effectively. In this brief, easy read, Costikyan truly does offer something for everyone.

(Warren Spector, award-winning veteran game developer)

Some interesting game discussions, but very uneven book. Poorly edited, a bit contrived. Should have been a collection of essays
By Mad Max
This book had some interesting analysis of games, particularly vintage video games & new social games like CityVille. But overall it was a bit disappointing to me. It wasn't what I thought it was about, it wasn't what it *said* it was about, and the thesis was thin and uneven.

This book is part of a series (by MIT) on playful themes. The author's thesis is that games are a fictive & nonthreatening way to "play" with uncertainty, and vicariously experience some control over uncertainty even though uncertainty is generally terrifying to most of us (in life).

I find this thesis absolutely fascinating. We discover in Chpt 3 that the thesis was extracted from quotes by sociologist Roger Caillois. But the thesis is proposed, then dropped. The book does not argue for the thesis at all. It is merely an idea thrown out there, a belief really, with nearly zero discussion to follow.

As we read on, we discover the entire book is like that. It's more a collection of musings than anything else. The author definitely poses interesting questions, but these questions are definitely better answered by somebody else (a psychologist or philosophers perhaps?). It also raises the question, how did this book sneak past the editorial board at MIT?

In chapters 2-3, the author argues that we have innate impulses to play. I agree, but again, I would have liked to see an argument or some research here. Instead, it just feels like a complete shift in thesis. Remember the initial thesis - that game-play is a psychological tool to cope with the terror of uncertainty. Now the author is comparing us to animals, stating that playfulness and fun are apparently innate to mammals.

Here (chpts 2-3), the author goes out on a limb, on topics completely outside his purview. These chapters probably should have been dropped completely, as they are irrelevant both to the thesis and to the gaming discussion that follows.

In making a cultural/sociological argument for games as a subset of play, he asserts that culture is what differentiates humans from other animals. For example, humans have eating rituals and animals do not. This is just plain bologna, and you wonder why the author (whose background is in computer programming) would bother sticking his neck out like this.

There are literally thousands of books (both popular and academic) about mammals, and their emotions and cultures. The author could have just picked one at random and written a more informed chapter. But the author only needs to turn on the Discovery Channel or National Geographic to know animals do indeed have their own rituals. In the end, the argument has nothing to do with his thesis or gaming analysis, so it seems equally as pointless to try to critique his ill-informed statements here.

Chapters 4 and 5 are the heart of the book. If you are looking for gaming analysis, I might even suggest going straight to these chapters, and skipping the rest.

But even so, the book continues to be very uneven. It appears the author is simply choosing his favorite games to critique and analyze - we are given no criteria whatsoever as to why he jumps from Mario Brothers to Chess to CityVille to Magic the Gathering (trading card game from the early 90's). The discussion is not organized by game type, by era, etc.

Additionally, the thesis here seems forced and contrived, which makes it read like an undergraduate reading assignment. In his discussion of Mario Brothers, for example, he goes on & on about how uncertainty is central to the game: "You have to jump at the right moment...that's uncertain...you have to jump over the bad guys...that's uncertain...you have to face the Boss...that's uncertain..." etc etc.

You could have made the same argument that oxygen is central to the game-play (i.e., You move right, take a breath, jump over the bad guy, take a breath, etc etc). Don't get me wrong. Once you cut through the contrivances, his analysis was actually interesting. But this is the "meat" of the book, and there just wasn't enough there. His analysis of chess, for example, was barely 2 pages.

It does seem obvious the authors favorite games are vintage video games, and current social media games. I didn't know much about either of these, so I found these sections interesting. Chpts 4-5 are by far the longest chapters in the book, by the way. But the book should have been organized much differently. For example, it could simply be a collection of essays on his thoughts about games. Or, one chapter on board games, one chapter on role playing games, one chapter on social games, one chapter on physical games, one chapter on card games, several chapters on video games (organized by decade), etc etc.

Chapter 5 fizzles out as the author discusses sources of uncertainty in games, such as your skill level, the skill level of other players (or computer), twists & turns in games, and the complexity in the game (such as chess). This chapter mostly summarized themes already discussed in the previous chapters.

In Chapter 6, the author introduces a brand new thesis. In discussing ideas for game development, he argues that being more intentional about placement of uncertainty would make for beter games. Once again, this book would have been much more successful as a series of essays by the author. At this point in the book, the author has switched gears so many times I'm not really sure what I'm reading (or why).

Chapter 7 contains a 1 page conclusion, demonstrating once again that the author does not know how to argue or summarize a thesis. This book definitely had some interesting ideas, but they were all undeveloped.

My initial interest in this book was to see if the concept of uncertainty in play had any educational applications for children. I abandoned all hope of gleaning any useful insights after the first page, but continued reading because of the promise of a discussion on uncertainty and randomness. The book never quite got there, either.

I put most of the blame for this book's shortcomings on the MIT editors. The author obviously had some interesting ideas, and with limited writing & academic background he really needed help organizing them.

If you like gaming history analysis, I recommend reading Chpts 4-5. If you're looking for philosophical, sociological, psychological, or educational insights, this is not the book for you.

Rambling and without substance
By Robert M. Seater
I've read a lot of books about games. Sometimes the provide advance, sometimes they note larger patterns & trends, sometimes they provide taxonomies, and sometimes they just point out insightful anecdotes. Even when one of those books seems mostly repetitive, there are some good insights.

This book doesn't seem to do any of those things, and I can't honestly say I learned anything at all from reading it -- I am left feeling mildly irritated at the writing style and without anything to show for it. After reading a section, I am hard pressed to describe _anything_ that was actually said. The book rambles on without saying anything, page after page. I can't see any kind of thesis or theme, nor is there concrete advice or abstract observations. There is just a string of trite comments about classic games, mostly the author describing himself playing the game -- but not with any depth, insight, or detail. I gained no new insight on either the games I knew well nor on the games I had not heard of. It spends a little bit of time giving a (poor) summary of Caillois's classic book, but even there the author seems to have failed to grasp even the most basic points of substance of what Caillois was saying.

On the rare occasion the book starts to actually starts to make any kind of claim or observation, it is oversimplified to the point of being clearly false. E.g. It beings one chapter saying "culture is what differentiates humans from other animals". No. Culture is _one_ of the properties that distinguishes humans, although even that property is not clear cut -- many other animals exhibit crude forms of culture, although rich extensive culture is distinctively human. But there are other properties that also distinguish humans. The author reduces a complex topic to a trite statement that is just wrong. Worse, I have no idea why the author even wants to make a point about culture, since the rest of the chapter then rambles on about other topics, failing to ever connect culture back to the topic of the book -- uncertainty in games. The claims about culture are tiny part of the book, but they exhibit the author's overall failure to use words precisely, his failure to have a focused point to an essay, and his apparent lack of knowledge of the subjects discussed.

There are too many good, great, and even mediocre books about games to waste time reading bad ones. I advise passing on this one.

Good for defining uncertanty
By Subliminalman
First I must say I enjoyed this series of books for being able to create meaningful content in a specific area of game design that is often overlooked in game design literature.

This book's strength is in it's wide breadth of examples it pulls from to describe different types of uncertainty. In fact the largest chapters, which compose most of the book, cover examples of games and the types of uncertainty they employ.

The book doesn't go too far away from those two things, providing existing examples and categorizing uncertainty types , so if you are looking for in depth use of each type of uncertainty you may be left somewhat wanting.

Still a great series and I am excited to see more added to it.

Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare

Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–02 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centres on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as a boy) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man. The play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder expected of the occasion, with plot elements drawn from the short story "Of Apollonius and Silla" by Barnabe Rich, based on a story by Matteo Bandello. The first recorded performance was on 2 February 1602, at Candlemas, the formal end of Christmastide in the year's calendar. The play was not published until its inclusion in the 1623 First Folio.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-In this verbal and visual treat, readers have the opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies. Coville's author's note explains that his prose adaptation is "not meant as a replacement for the original, but as an appetizer for the greater feast still to come." Thus, the story is clear and carefully told, making it easy both to follow the primary and secondary plot lines and to appreciate the intricacies of their interweavings. Coville keeps the flavor of the playwright's poetic language by using actual quotes from the play and expressions and a formal sentence structure true to the style of Elizabethan times. Delightful full-page, colored pen-and-ink illustrations add just the right touch of humor to the already wacky tale. Raglin gives a distinctive identity to all of the characters, despite their attempted disguises, and he does a particularly good job of differentiating the buffoons of the subplot from the more realistically drawn dramatis personae. Colors and designs clearly suggest the Italian court dress of the times, and accurate architectural details add life to the settings. More suited to modern audiences than Charles and Mary Lamb's classic Tales from Shakespeare (Signet, 1986), and far better written than Jan Dean's Twelfth Night (Oxford, 2002), this is a version that will have young listeners begging to portray the Bard's scenes onstage. And, isn't that, after all, the whole point?-Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. The latest in Coville's series of retold Shakespearean plays, this volume provides a short, prose version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy that offers young people such promising elements as separated twins, a woman disguised as a man, a drunken buffoon, courtship, swordplay, mistaken identity, and a practical joke. Though simplified, the story is intact and bits of the original language are preserved. Large-scale ink drawings, warmed with tints of color and shaded with cross-hatching, clearly depict the action. As Coville states in his Author's Note, "Twelfth Night remains one of the most read and performed of Shakespeare's plays." Children looking for a preperformance introduction to the play's twisting plot will find this an appealing choice. Carolyn Phelan

Excellent addition to your 12 Night shelf
By Sammy Clemens
There are several really worthwhile editions of 12th Night, but don't overlook this one.

The Foreword and notes are excellent and useful; the format's sturdy and readable.

It's a good copy to have for the scholar/performer/director.

Understanding Shakespeare
By Amazon Customer
For a long time I would not let my students use No Fear because I wanted them to be able to read the play in Shakespeare's words, but when I tired to discuss the plays with them, I always felt like I was the only who read the play. (I use it for Hamlet as well.) After I let them use it the first time, I was so excited to hear my students' comments on the play because they actually understood what they were reading. When they write about the play and when we discuss it, we use Shakespeare's words. We also compare the modern words and Shakespeare's words. I really like the No Fears and recommend them to people who really want to understand Shakespeare. I have taught high school and am now teaching at a university, so I know the No Fears are great on both levels.

Naxos complete recording the best so far
By F. Behrens
Please notice that G.H.'s in-house review above does not refer to the recording pictured above, nor do any of the reviews so far. What follows refers only to the Naxos set.
There are now three complete recordings of available. We have the older and elegantly read version on Harper Audio with Dorothy Tutin as the best Viola of the lot. Acted with a bit more verve though with less poetry is the Arkangel Shakespeare recording with a Scottish Malvolio and a cast of younger sounding actors who are making names for themselves in Great Britain. However I am very impressed with the "Twelfth Night" that is one of the latest additions to the Naxos Classic Drama series.
By far, this is the best-produced "Twelfth Night." One actually feels he is hearing an actual stage performance with all of the action but with the loss of none of the poetry. Perhaps the Viola does sound a little maturer than imagination would have her and the Sir Toby Belch a little less belchy sounding than others. None of the Festes sing as marvelously as did Peter Pears on the long deleted Marlowe Society recording (also with Tutin); however, on this Naxos set David Timson stays nicely in tune--and directs the production to boot. And he keeps things moving neatly along, which is saying a lot for Shakespeare recordings.
The CD version has the advantage of excellent tracking cues for not only each scene but for key points within the scene. The Harper CDs give a new track only for each new scene and the tapes (of course) are quite useless in that regard. The Arkangel series at present exists only on tapes but they are planning to reissue the entire series on CDs. So this Naxos release is the one of choice so far.

The Practical, Start-to-Finish Guide to Modern Digital Design Verification

As digital logic designs grow larger and more complex, functional verification has become the number one bottleneck in the design process. Reducing verification time is crucial to project success, yet many practicing engineers have had little formal training in verification, and little exposure to the newest solutions. Hardware Design Verification systematically presents today's most valuable simulation-based and formal verification techniques, helping test and design engineers choose the best approach for each project, quickly gain confidence in their designs, and move into fabrication far more rapidly. College students will find that coverage of verification principles and common industry practices will help them prepare for jobs as future verification engineers.

Author William K. Lam, one of the world's leading experts in design verification, is a recent winner of the Chairman's Award for Innovation, Sun Microsystems' most prestigious technical achievement award. Drawing on his wide-ranging experience, he introduces the foundational principles of verification, presents traditional techniques that have survived the test of time, and introduces emerging techniques for today's most challenging designs. Throughout, Lam emphasizes practical examples rather than mathematical proofs; wherever advanced math is essential, he explains it clearly and accessibly.

Coverage includes

  • Simulation-based versus formal verification: advantages, disadvantages, and tradeoffs
  • Coding for verification: functional and timing correctness, syntactical and structure checks, simulation performance, and more
  • Simulator architectures and operations, including event-driven, cycle-based, hybrid, and hardware-based simulators
  • Testbench organization, design, and tools: creating a fast, efficient test environment
  • Test scenarios and assertion: planning, test cases, test generators, commercial and Verilog assertions, and more
  • Ensuring complete coverage, including code, parameters, functions, items, and cross-coverage
  • The verification cycle: failure capture, scope reduction, bug tracking, simulation data dumping, isolation of underlying causes, revision control, regression, release mechanisms, and tape-out criteria
  • An accessible introduction to the mathematics and algorithms of formal verification, from Boolean functions to state-machine equivalence and graph algorithms
  • Decision diagrams, equivalence checking, and symbolic simulation
  • Model checking and symbolic computation

Simply put, Hardware Design Verification will help you improve and accelerate your entire verification process--from planning through tape-out--so you can get to market faster with higher quality designs.

Two groups of people are essential to a successful design project: a design team and a verification team. Designers usually have formal training from schools. Many colleges have comprehensive curricula on logic design, ranging from introduction to digital design to advanced computer architecture. On the contrary, most verification engineers learn their trade on the job; few were educated as verification engineers in academia, although many schools are beginning to teach verification curriculum. In fact, a majority of verification engineers started out as designers and gradually transitioned to design verification. Unlike design techniques and methodologies, a broad range of verification knowledge is loosely organized and informally acquired through hands-on experience. Furthermore, the horizon of verification has been expanding at a rapid pace: The verification landscape is evolving every six months with new techniques, standards, and tools. Nevertheless, there are principles and techniques that have survived the test of time and prove to be cornerstones of verification.

This book collects and organizes a wide range of digital design verification techniques and methodologies commonly used in industry and presents them in a systematic fashion. The focus of the book is on digital logic design and verification. It does not cover verification of circuits with mixed-signal or radio frequency components. A goal of the book is to pass the vast amount of verification knowledge to college students and engineers so that they are better prepared for the workforce, and to speed up their learning pace. It is tempting to write a ten-minute verification engineering book that lists detailed practical tips that can be used immediately on the job. These quick-fix tips often become obsolete over a short period of time. On the other hand, presenting the principles only will not be immensely useful for practicing engineers. Thus, I decided to strike a balance between the two and present verification principles as well as common practices. It is my belief that only by understanding the principles can one truly grasp the essence of the practices and be creative about using them.

To the Audience

One targeted audience for this book includes undergraduate students at the junior or senior level or first-level graduate students. I will assume that these readers have a sound understanding of a hardware descriptive language, preferably Verilog, because Verilog is used for illustration purposes in most parts of the book. In addition, a rudimentary knowledge of logic design is beneficial. This book is an introduction to design verification. Through its study, students will learn the main ideas, tools, and methodologies used in simulation-based verification, and the principles behind formal verification. The materials presented are industry tested and widely used. At the end of each chapter, problems are presented as a means of refreshing the knowledge covered in the chapter. For those who want to explore certain topics in more depth, please refer to the citations listed in the bibliography.

The other targeted audience includes verification professionals who may have some verification experience but would like to get a systematic overview of the different areas in verification and an understanding of the basic principles behind formal verification. The prerequisites for this audience are similar to those for the first group: basic design knowledge and a hardware descriptive language. The first part of the book provides a comprehensive treatment of simulation-based verification methodology and serves as a refresher or an introduction to verification professionals. For many practicing engineers, formal verification tools appear to be a form of black magic that requires a doctorate in mathematics to comprehend. This book explains these tools and the working principles of formal verification. Before formal verification is discussed in depth, Chapter 7 reviews the basics of mathematics and computer algorithms required to understand verification algorithms fully.

As with every technology, there is no substitution for hands-on experience. I encourage you to get acquainted with verification tools by running some of the examples and problems in the book or designing a project that makes use of the tools described. Free CAD tools such as Verilog simulator, test bench development aid, and waveform viewer are available at www.verilog.net/free.html.

To the Instructor

This book is comprised of two parts. The first part addresses the conventional verification strategy-simulation-based verification-whereas the second part addresses the aspects of formal verification that are well established in academia and tested in industry. The two parts are self-contained and thus can be taught independently as deemed fit.

The first part describes many verification tools. Because the specifics of these tools differ from vendor to vendor and change from time to time, only pseudo common commands are used in this book. To reinforce learning these tools, I recommend that industrial tools be part of a verification laboratory (for instance, a simulator, a waveform viewer, a coverage tool, a bug tracking system, and a revision control system). Similarly, to solidify the knowledge of formal verification, commercial formal verification tools such as an HDL linter, a model checker, and an equivalence checker should be used during lab sessions.

This book has a companion instructor's manual that contains the solutions to all the problems at the end of each chapter. The instructor's manual is available on request to the publisher.

Organization of the Book

Again, this book is intended as an introduction to design verification. I will assume that you have an understanding of basic Verilog constructs. Even though the book is written using Verilog as the hardware description language, I made an effort to present ideas independent of Verilog. When the use of Verilog is unavoidable, the simplest Verilog constructs are used to allow readers unfamiliar with the language to grasp the main ideas.

As previously stated, this book consists of two parts. The first part is devoted to simulation-based verification and the second part discusses formal verification. Simulation-based verification is by far the most widely used methodology and is a necessary requirement for all verification engineers. Formal verification is a relatively new technology and it complements simulation-based verification. I believe that to utilize a technology best, one must first be equipped with an in-depth understanding of the internal working principles of that technology. As a result, instead of just studying a verification tool's operations at the user level-a topic better suited for user manuals-this book spends much time studying the fundamental principles of simulation and formal technology.

The first part--simulation technology--consists of Chapters 2 through 6, and these chapters are ordered similar to the usual sequence of operations encountered during a simulation verification process. We start with Chapter 2, checking for static errors. These are errors that can be detected without input vectors and must be eliminated before extensive simulation begins. In Chapter 3, we study the basic architectures of simulators. Event-driven and cycle-based simulation algorithms are presented first, followed by simulator operations and applications for which we discuss cosimulation, design profiling, common simulator options, and the user interface.

Before one can begin a simulation, one must construct a test bench to host the design. Chapter 4 discusses test bench design, initialization, stimuli generation, clock network, error injection, result assessment, and test configuration. After a design is free of static errors and is embedded in a test bench, it is ready to be simulated. But how should the design be simulated? Chapter 5 addresses the issues of what to simulate and how to measure the quality of the simulation. We will look at test plan design, generation of tests for the items in the test plan, output response assessment, assertion (particularly, SystemVerilog assertions), and verification coverage.

After a circuit is simulated and the bugs are discovered, the next step is to debug problems found during simulation. Chapter 6 presents widely used debugging techniques, including case reduction, check pointing, error tracing, trace dumping, and forward and backward debugging. In addition, Chapter 6 examines the four basic views of design: source code, schematic, waveform, and finite-state machine. We then examine the scenario after the bugs are fixed. The tools and methodology discussed include the revision control system, regression mechanism, and tape-out criteria.

The second part of the book--formal verification--consists of Chapters 7 through 9. Several chapters in the first part of the book can be studied in conjunction with the second. For example, Chapters 2, 4, 5, and 6 are also applicable to formal verification.

The key to understanding formal verification lies in an understanding of the theory behind it. Chapter 7 provides the basic mathematical background for the later chapters. The materials cover Boolean functions and representations, symmetric Boolean functions, finite-state machines and the equivalence algorithm, and graphic algorithms such as depth-first search and breadth-first search, and strongly connected components.

Chapter 8 presents a survey of decision diagrams, with an emphasis on binary decision diagrams. We then review SAT (satisfiability) as an alternative to decision diagrams. The chapter concludes with a look at applications of decision diagrams and SAT in equivalence checking and symbolic simulation.

Chapter 9 presents an in-depth study of symbolic model checking. First it presents automata and computational tree logic as a means of modeling temporal behavior with fairness constraints. It then discusses algorithms for checking a model against a temporal specification. Based on the model-checking algo...

good depth and breadth on both simulation and formal stuff
By Steve "RTL" Weiss
Finally a book on both simulation and formal verification with good depth. My company uses both tools on a daily basis.

I always wanted to learn about formal verification. Many books I have are too mathematical to follow. This book gives an easy intro. to formal verification and leads to the inner working of algorithms in formal verification. The sections on equivalence checking and symbolic simulation are very enlightening. Now I am more confident working with formal tools, after I know the principles behind them.

The book is great on simulation-based verification. it has a lot of practical advices and its presentation is very well organized. The chapters on coding for verification is especially practical --- I put them into use right away. The testbench chapter gives not only examples but also provides an insightful overview of testbench architecture. I skimmed through the chapter on simulators and caught a couple of good insights on the architectures of various kinds of simulators. I haven't finished the book yet but it is so far so good.

The only problem is that the book is too big, 600 pages! Some of the stuff probably should belong to another book.

In summary, I think every verification and design engineer should read it to get a running start.

good graduate level text
By W Boudville
Lam addresses an increasingly troubling problem in semiconductor design. As the transistor count keeps climbing, how to adequately simulate and test a chip?

Well, simulation comes first. The book describes design verification, where by this Lam restricts himself to functional verification. This is itself a large field, as can be appreciated by what the book presents of it. The text gives a good account of key ideas like equivalence checking and property checking. Where the basic idea is to have a redundant check that will hopefully point out any errors.

Then simulations are considered. These take up a large portion of the text. One approach is to build a comprehensive set of input test vectors. Of course, usually the number of possible combinations is too large to test all of these. But Lam points out that often groupings of the input are possible, with you only needing to test a few values from each group.

Another approach is to start from a formal set of specifications. It may be fair to say that both involve different types of complexity.

Lam also helps the reader by furnishing an extended problem set at the end of each chapter. The problems are nontrivial enough to give the reader a good workout. Very suitable as a graduate text, as well as at the professional level.

A fine new version of an old classic.
By Mike Cervantes
Every G.I. Joe fan worth their cut-out trading cards knows about Marvel's issue 21 of the G.I. Joe comic book, presented without a single thought or word bubble done partially for artistic merit and partially because the issue was running behind schedule. Carrie Vaughn takes a pass at the plot of the silent issue with an additional hook: it is now told entirely from the perspective of the story's anonymous captive, named Lena Amari by Vaughn. Revealed to be an American diplomat, she relates the circumstances of her rescue by Scarlett and Snake Eyes in first person, providing a perspective that fleshes out the original story and provides much needed realism to the G.I. Joe premise. Upon being captured, Lena does not immediately suspect Cobra, as there are many other potential suspects in the near-East, and she often wonders about how a Terrorist organization like Cobra can manage to tag so many red snake logos on everything. The overall story doesn't follow the original comic completely, but as the comic is already written and acclaimed enough that an alternate take like the one by Vaughn can be just as appreciated. This is a fantastic short story. totally recommended.

Knowing is half the battle... But this is completely awesome!
By Raydeen Graffam
I've been a fan of GI JOE since I was a little kid. So a few years ago... No really, it's been a long time. What I enjoyed about this story is that it brings those characters back into my life and it gives them a fresh story that lives and breathes. In comics and cartoons you only get the surface. In stories like this one you get the deeper story with all the same bells and whistles of technicolor action
