Chris Bambery is a writer, broadcaster, TV producer and founding member of the International Socialist Group in Scotland. For many years he was the Secretary of the British Socialist Worker Party. If you are looking for a great history book on Scotland

An interesting book, but ultimately it suffers from the same problems as other "people's history"/history from below-type works. By ignoring the major figures of history in favor of the common people, Bambery is doing the same thing traditional history books are criticized for but in reverse. Additionally, he allocates more than half of the book to the 20th century alone, with the entire history of Scotland up until then receiving only 140 pages. Interesting things happened in the last century, to be sure, but do we really think the Edinburgh music scene and anti-nuclear movements of the 1960s are more important to Scottish history than the battles of Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn?

If you are looking for a great history book on Scotland, you'll be disappointed. If you want to learn about the Scottish labor movement, and why they hate Margaret Thatcher so much, this is the book for you.

True to its aspirations, a history from below

I ordered this book with interest from the city of Dunedin in New Zealand renowned for its Scottish heritage.

From the first chapter I was taken by it. The history is written with a real and genuine voice from below and little or time at all is taken to think of the "great men" much less the monarchs in England. This is a colourful and blunt history and thoroughly researched.

I reccomend this to anyone... and it makes me very much want to visit Scotland!

An ok history of Scottish organized labor

A People's History of Scotland is an ok ok history of Scottish organized labor in the 20th century, with a long preamble of the previous history of Scotland. I read this to understand better why Scotland's politics were traditionally left of center and the rise of the Scottish National Party. While I believe this work does explain that perspective decently enough, it often fails to account for all the people of Scotland, even in the 20th century, and the pressures internal and external.

The author does a decent job of citing songs and poetry as part of profiles of individuals. Because the focus of this book is on left of center politics, individuals in traditional communities tend to get overlooked, whether in traditional churches or communities.

About the Author
Dr. Miller (Ph.D., University of Minnesota) is professor of psychology at San Francisco State University. She has held faculty positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia and also has served as Department Head, Associate Dean, and Director of Women’s Studies. Her research focuses on cognitive development during childhood. More specifically, she studies cognitive strategies, executive function, metacognition, memory, attention, social cognitive development, theory of mind, and gender. Her theoretical interests include theories of development and feminist theories of knowledge. One current topic of interest, the effects of exercise on children’s executive function and school achievement, is funded by NIH.

Super Awesome Book

We just finished it for my class and I thought it was great not a lot of people know about the welfare rights movement because of the civil rights movement going on at the time and she did a great job at showing the welfare recipients as activist and not as lazy ppl who want money it was nice to hear them as a voice and not as a stereotype!

I've enjoyed all aspects of the series through Tread Fearless! There's good insight for people that have never considered disaster scenarios (most of us) woven throughout an interesting story. I'm really looking forward to the next book!

I loved Tread Fearless. I love the addition of the two characters Mark and Lauren. In the earlier books, Mark is mentioned several times and in this book, his story really picks up. His travels and explorations of the FEMA camps might shed some light on what is a possibiity if you end up in a FEMA camp someday. Lauren is a breath of fresh air as well. John and Pete and the crew are making their way to Colorado and thier travels are also enlightening. I really like how even though we get a view of the bad things that can happen or what bad people can do with power, in this book, we also see alot of good people just trying to survive. We get a glimpse of all kinds of people and all walks of life in both John's and Mark's travels. The cattle ranchers in Oklahoma and the two sets of "just kids" trying to make sense of what is happening as they are lost without their parents, the lawyer with the 2 boys, etc...you will see what I mean when you read the book. We also get a glimpse of survivors whose spouses are dead. A very real probability or possibilty in light of this new post-disaster world. And of coarse, a little bit of love is in the air too. A nice touch for the romantics in us. Great book. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

An absolutely beautiful book. Currently sitting in my local coffee shop with blotchy cheeks and mascara running down my face.

I don't usually write reviews, but I was compelled to write one for this book. I am a writer, not a fisherman. I actually don't really like fishing nor know anything about it. That didn't make me any less spellbound by this tale.

The writing is gorgeous and precise and sly and so unexpected beautiful and logical and funny and emotional. It reads differently than the books I'm used to reading. There's no faux suspense. There's no tricks or shock value. It's just a beautiful story.

It took me a little while to get completely invested. I'd say I read the first 30 pages slowly, and then the remainder all at once (of the title story).

I know this isn't a great book review, but just wanted to add my opinion. I'm a 26 year old female who works in the tech industry. My one fishing experience was when I caught a fish with my grandpa when I was 7 and it was bleeding and I cried for two days. I loved this book. Don't discount it because it's about fishing. It is beautiful and perfect, or maybe I should say "more perfect."

Poetically Written

I watched the movie a long time ago and recently decided to read the book on the airplane. It's a good thing I was on the plane as a captive audience because things plod along very very slowly as a result of some very technical terms used in fishing. I've never caught a fish. I buy them at the grocery store. It's okay though because there's a story woven into even this technical talk - a story about the person catching the fish. It picks up along the way and fairly soon you realize you're reading an incredible bit of literature - made more incredible by the fact that it's true. It's poetic. I felt warm and at times, even felt the sun warming my back as if I was the standing in the river - fishing.

"Now nearly all those I loved and did not understand when I was young are dead, but still I reach out to them.

"Of course, now I am too old to be much of a fisherman, and now of course I usually fish the big waters alone, although some friends think I shouldn't. Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.

"I am haunted by waters"

About the Author
JAMES MOMOH, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Center for Energy Systems and Control at Howard University. Dr. Momoh also serves as Principal Consultant at Bonneville Power Administration. He has authored or coauthored several books, including Operation and Control of Electric Energy Processing Systems and Economic Market Design and Planning for Electric Power Systems, both from Wiley-IEEE Press. Dr. Momoh is dedicated to the development of interdisciplinary research and education programs in systems engineering, energy systems, and power economics.
